Broward Sheriff’s Office arrests driver accused of fleeing scene after deadly crash involving pedestrian
Broward County, Florida – A tragic hit-and-run crash in North Lauderdale has left one man dead and another facing serious criminal charges, according to authorities with the Broward Sheriff’s Office.
Detectives from the Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit arrested a driver they say struck and killed a pedestrian during the early morning hours of March 15. The crash happened along a busy stretch of roadway where investigators say the driver left the scene after the collision.
Deputies first responded to the incident at approximately 2:15 a.m. that Sunday. The crash occurred near the 5500 block of North State Road 7, a major roadway that runs through parts of Broward County.
When investigators arrived, they found that the crash involved a single vehicle and a pedestrian. Emergency crews quickly assessed the situation, but the pedestrian had suffered fatal injuries.
According to the preliminary investigation conducted at the scene, Maurice Scott was driving a 2021 Infiniti Q50 southbound along North State Road 7 when the collision occurred. At the same time, the pedestrian, identified as Pedro Lopez Montejo, was attempting to cross the roadway.
Investigators say Montejo was crossing North State Road 7 in an area that did not have a designated crosswalk when he was struck by the approaching vehicle.
What happened immediately after the crash became a key part of the investigation.
Authorities say Scott briefly stopped following the impact. Detectives reported that he exited the vehicle and looked at the victim lying in the roadway. However, rather than remaining at the scene or calling for help, investigators say Scott returned to his vehicle and drove away.
Leaving the scene of a crash involving serious injury or death is a criminal offense under Florida law, and cases like this are handled by specialized investigators trained to reconstruct fatal crashes.
Traffic Homicide Unit detectives began gathering evidence at the scene shortly after the crash was reported. Through investigative work, authorities were eventually able to determine the identity of the driver believed to be responsible.
Detectives later located Scott and took him into custody.
He is now facing two charges in connection with the incident. According to authorities, Scott has been charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death. Investigators also filed an additional charge of tampering with evidence.
Officials have not released further details about the circumstances surrounding the crash or what evidence led to the second charge.
The investigation remains active as detectives continue to review the incident and gather information.
Fatal pedestrian crashes remain a serious concern across many communities, particularly on busy roadways where traffic speeds are higher and crosswalks may be limited. Authorities often urge both drivers and pedestrians to remain cautious, especially during overnight hours when visibility can be reduced.
For the family and loved ones of Pedro Lopez Montejo, the incident marks a devastating loss.
Meanwhile, investigators with the Broward Sheriff’s Office continue working to piece together every detail surrounding the crash. Officials say additional updates may be released as the investigation progresses.
