City of Fort Lauderdale begins SW 16th Street stormwater improvements to reduce flooding and improve drainage

Fort Lauderdale, Florida – The City of Fort Lauderdale, Florida has announced a series of stormwater system upgrades along SW 16th Street, east of Riverland Road in the Flamingo Park, Fort Lauderdale neighborhood. In collaboration with Southern Underground Industries, the project is aimed at improving drainage, reducing flooding risks, and enhancing the overall infrastructure in the area.

The improvements include the installation of a new 12-inch diameter stormwater pipe, designed to increase the capacity of the local drainage system. Additionally, crews will restore a stormwater catch basin located within a driveway near the cul-de-sac at the end of the street. Asphalt and landscaping that are affected during construction will also be restored once the work is complete, helping to maintain the neighborhood’s aesthetic appeal.

Construction is set to begin on Monday, April 13, 2026, and officials anticipate that the project will be completed by Friday, April 24, 2026. Work will occur Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., though the schedule may be adjusted in response to inclement weather or unforeseen issues. City officials stress that safety and efficiency are top priorities and ask residents to remain patient as crews complete the work.

Traffic in the area will be temporarily affected during construction. The westbound lane of SW 16th Street, east of Riverland Road, may be closed during work hours. Traffic control personnel will be on-site to guide drivers and maintain access to local driveways.
