Mosquito season is approaching and city officials urge residents to take precautions to stay safe
South Florida – As temperatures climb and summer rainstorms become more frequent across South Florida, local officials are reminding residents that mosquito season is quickly approaching. In response, the City of Hollywood, Florida is working closely with Broward County Mosquito Control to keep the public informed and prepared as mosquito activity begins to increase.
Seasonal rains often create ideal conditions for mosquitoes to breed. Pools of standing water, even very small ones, can quickly turn into breeding grounds. As a result, the summer months typically bring a noticeable rise in mosquito populations across communities in Broward County, Florida.
Health officials warn that mosquitoes are more than just a nuisance. Certain species can carry diseases that pose real health risks to people. Among the illnesses that can spread through mosquito bites are Dengue Fever, Chikungunya, West Nile Virus, and Malaria.
To reduce these risks, Broward County operates a structured mosquito management program designed to monitor mosquito activity and respond when populations begin to rise.
How mosquito control is carried out
According to county officials, mosquito control involves more than just spraying neighborhoods. Instead, crews rely on what is known as an integrated mosquito management approach, combining several strategies to limit mosquito growth at different stages of their life cycle.
One of the first steps involves field inspections and surveillance. Trained teams regularly monitor mosquito populations throughout the county and inspect areas where mosquitoes are likely to breed. This helps identify problem areas before mosquito numbers become too high.
Another key method focuses on treating larvae before they develop into adult mosquitoes. When standing water is found in places such as drainage areas or roadside puddles, crews apply larvicide treatments. These treatments target mosquito larvae living in the water and prevent them from maturing into biting adults.
If mosquito populations continue to grow beyond certain thresholds, additional action may be taken. In those cases, targeted adulticide treatments — commonly referred to as spraying — may be used to reduce the number of adult mosquitoes in a specific area.
Officials say these efforts are carefully coordinated throughout the county and carried out in collaboration with local municipalities and public health agencies to ensure responses are both timely and effective.
Residents play an important role
While county crews monitor mosquito activity and respond when needed, officials emphasize that residents also play a critical role in controlling mosquito populations.
Many mosquito breeding sites are found around homes, often in everyday items that collect rainwater. Buckets left outdoors, flowerpot trays, birdbaths, clogged gutters, and even small containers can hold enough water for mosquitoes to reproduce.
By simply removing standing water around their homes, residents can significantly reduce the number of places where mosquitoes can breed.
Officials encourage homeowners to regularly check their yards and outdoor spaces, especially after heavy rain. Emptying containers, refreshing birdbaths, and properly storing items that can collect water can help limit mosquito activity in residential neighborhoods.
Preparing for the months ahead
As the rainy season approaches, the partnership between the City of Hollywood and Broward County aims to ensure residents understand both the risks and the prevention strategies available.
Officials say the combination of county monitoring programs and community participation is one of the most effective ways to reduce mosquito populations.
Residents seeking additional guidance about mosquito prevention, county services, or how to request mosquito control assistance are encouraged to visit official county resources online.
With warmer weather and increased rainfall on the horizon, local leaders hope that awareness and early prevention will help keep mosquito activity under control and protect the health of the community throughout the summer months.
