Becca’s Closet and Macy’s surprise Nova High School seniors with $65,000 gift to fully fund prom for the Class of 2026
Broward County, Florida – Excitement and emotion filled the auditorium at Nova High School when seniors received an unexpected announcement that instantly transformed their plans for one of the most anticipated nights of the school year.
During a school assembly on Thursday morning, representatives from Becca’s Closet and Macy’s revealed a generous gift that stunned students and faculty alike. The organizations presented a $65,000 check to cover the entire cost of the Class of 2026 senior prom, ensuring that every graduating senior can attend the event without paying anything.
The surprise moment unfolded in front of hundreds of students gathered in the school auditorium. Teachers and administrators joined the seniors as the announcement was made, marking a memorable milestone for the graduating class.
For many students, prom represents one of the final shared experiences before graduation. Yet for some families, the cost of tickets, attire, and other related expenses can place a heavy burden on household budgets. The newly announced funding removes that obstacle entirely, allowing every senior at Nova High to celebrate the milestone together.
The gesture carries special meaning for the school community because of where the organization behind it first began. Becca’s Closet traces its origins back to Nova High School itself, where a simple act of generosity grew into a movement that would eventually reach across the country.
The nonprofit was founded by student Rebecca “Becca” Kirtman, who started a dress drive while attending the school. Her goal was straightforward but powerful: to help classmates who could not afford prom dresses attend the dance with confidence and dignity.

What began as a small project quickly gained momentum. Over time, the effort expanded far beyond a single school hallway or community donation drive. Today, Becca’s Closet has grown into a national nonprofit with more than 50 chapters, helping students across the United States access formalwear for prom and other special events.
The organization has also developed a scholarship program designed to support students as they continue their education beyond high school. Through both its dress distribution programs and its scholarships, Becca’s Closet continues to carry forward the spirit of kindness that inspired its creation.
That history makes the donation to Nova High particularly meaningful. The school where the organization was first launched has now become the recipient of a gift that reflects the same values of inclusion and support.
For seniors preparing for graduation, the announcement added an extra layer of excitement to an already busy spring semester. Prom is widely considered one of the defining moments of high school life, offering students the chance to gather with friends, celebrate accomplishments, and create lasting memories before moving on to the next chapter of their lives.
Thanks to the partnership between Becca’s Closet and Macy’s, the Class of 2026 will now experience that celebration without financial barriers.
School leaders say the surprise gift also sends a broader message about community support and the power of generosity. What started years ago with one student’s determination to help others has now come full circle.
As the seniors prepare for prom later this year, many will remember not only the dance itself but also the moment when an unexpected announcement reminded them that small acts of kindness can grow into something far bigger than anyone imagined.
