Lauderdale Lakes, Florida – Detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) are actively investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Friday evening in Lauderdale Lakes, leaving the community reeling and authorities seeking answers. The incident, which claimed the life of a transgender woman, unfolded shortly before 7 p.m. on November 14 near a residence in the 3300 block of Northwest 37th Street.

According to BSO officials, Broward County Regional Communications received a medical call reporting an emergency at the location. Deputies and personnel from Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue quickly responded to the scene. Upon arrival, first responders discovered the victim sitting in the front passenger seat of a vehicle with apparent gunshot injuries. She was promptly transported to Broward Health Medical Center, where, tragically, she was pronounced deceased.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office Homicide and Crime Scene units took over the investigation immediately. Authorities confirmed that the suspect, identified as Shannoyd Whyte Jr., was apprehended at the scene. Investigators recovered a firearm and indicated that the shooting stemmed from an altercation between the victim and Whyte Jr., which began as a verbal argument and escalated into physical violence inside the suspect’s vehicle.

According to investigators, the victim and suspect were engaged in a verbal argument which turned physical while inside of Whyte Jr.’s vehicle,” BSO stated in a press release. “At some point, the victim was shot while sitting in the car. Whyte Jr. told detectives he and the victim have been in a relationship for several years.”

Whyte Jr. was immediately taken into custody and transported to BSO’s Main Jail, where he now faces a charge of first-degree murder with a firearm. Authorities have not released further details regarding a possible motive beyond the confrontation inside the vehicle, emphasizing that the investigation is ongoing and active.

Residents and neighbors in Lauderdale Lakes expressed shock following news of the incident. Many described the area as typically quiet and were unsettled by the sudden violence. Law enforcement officials have appealed to anyone who may have witnessed the event or has information that could assist in the investigation to come forward and contact the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

BSO’s Homicide and Crime Scene units continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including reviewing physical evidence and interviewing potential witnesses. The department has reiterated its commitment to conducting a thorough investigation and ensuring that justice is served.

This tragic event underscores ongoing concerns around domestic disputes and firearm safety in the community, highlighting the need for awareness and intervention to prevent similar incidents. As the investigation continues, local authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office will release additional updates as the case develops. Meanwhile, the Lauderdale Lakes community mourns the loss of the victim and seeks answers regarding the circumstances that led to this devastating event.
