Fort Lauderdale, Florida – Fort Lauderdale will begin installing early flood warning sensors at 10 neighborhood locations on Monday, October 26, as part of a partnership with Broward County. The project is expected to continue through late December 2026, with temporary traffic and sidewalk disruptions near installation sites.

The RAIN sensors will monitor real-time weather and flood conditions to help improve neighborhood forecasting and storm alerts. Contractor FGC will install the units within the public right-of-way, according to the city’s project announcement.

Crews are scheduled to work Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Each location is expected to require approximately two days of work. One day will be devoted to building the concrete foundation, followed by another day for the pole, electrical work and sensor installation.

The installation sites include 3070 SW 17th St. in Chula Vista, 1651 SW 32nd Pl. in Edgewood, 2780 SW 1st St. in Melrose Manors, 545 E. Campus Cir. in Melrose Park and 1450 SW 19th Ave. in Shady Banks.

Additional sensors will be installed at 700 NE 19th Ave. in Victoria Park, 1100 SW 21st St. in River Oaks, 303 SE 17th St. in Poinciana Park, 1400 NW 14th Ct. in Lauderdale Manors and 899 NE 15th St. in Middle River Terrace.

Temporary single-lane closures are expected during work hours. Traffic control personnel will direct vehicles when needed, and drivers should follow posted signs and use caution when approaching crews and equipment.

Residents will retain access to their driveways throughout construction. If installation work takes place near a private driveway, crews will coordinate directly with the affected neighbors to maintain access while completing the work.

Pedestrians should also expect brief sidewalk closures near the installation areas. Marked detours will guide people around those sections while crews are working.

Although the city expects the overall project to finish in late December, the schedule may change because of inclement weather or unforeseen site conditions. The roughly two-day estimate applies to work at each individual location, rather than the entire installation program.

The city thanked residents for their patience during construction and asked everyone traveling near the sites to observe the posted safety instructions.
