Florida man arrested in Miami Dade after allegedly stealing hundreds of pounds of avocados from a private farm
Miami-Dade, Florida – A Miami-Dade man was arrested early Thursday morning after deputies say he was caught stealing hundreds of pounds of avocados from a private farm in the Redland area. Authorities say the unusual theft took place during an overnight patrol, leading to the recovery of the stolen fruit and the arrest of the suspect without incident.
According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office (MDSO), deputies were patrolling the agricultural area around 2:30 a.m. when they noticed a man dressed in dark clothing inside a commercial avocado grove. The individual was later identified as 29-year-old Edel Perez. Investigators reported seeing Perez actively picking avocados from the trees and placing them into multiple bags. A black Mercedes Benz was parked nearby along the roadway, and deputies discovered additional bags of freshly picked avocados and other produce in the vehicle’s trunk.
Authorities estimated that Perez had stolen approximately 400 pounds of avocados, with a total value of around $800. The arrest report states that Perez gained access to the property by entering through a damaged or cut section of fencing. When questioned, he reportedly admitted that the avocados did not belong to him and acknowledged his intention to sell the fruit to purchase Christmas gifts for his children. Deputies also noted that Perez stated he was currently unemployed.
“This is a clear case of theft from a private agricultural property, and Florida law treats such offenses seriously,” said a spokesperson for MDSO. “We take protection of local farms and produce very seriously, and our deputies were able to recover the avocados and make an arrest quickly.”
Perez was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. He has been charged with third-degree grand theft and trespassing on an agricultural site, both felony offenses under Florida law. His bond was set at $5,000. No injuries were reported during the incident, and all stolen avocados were recovered by authorities.
The Redland area is home to numerous commercial farms, and theft of produce has been a concern for local growers. While avocados are small individually, the sheer volume of 400 pounds represents a significant loss for farm operators, who must contend with labor costs and market prices in addition to the stolen goods. The MDSO emphasized that the arrest serves as a reminder that law enforcement actively patrols agricultural areas to prevent theft and protect local farmers.
The suspect’s reasoning for the theft, citing plans to buy Christmas gifts, has drawn attention on social media, with some expressing sympathy while others criticized the act. Regardless of intent, authorities maintain that theft and trespassing cannot be condoned. “While we understand the pressures individuals may face, breaking the law and entering private property is never justified,” the MDSO spokesperson added.
The arrest highlights both the unusual nature of the crime and the proactive work of local law enforcement in safeguarding the agricultural community. Perez’s case will now proceed through the Miami-Dade County court system, where he faces felony charges that could carry significant penalties if convicted.
Local farm owners say they hope the arrest sends a message to would-be thieves that stealing from farms will not be tolerated. Many also praised the deputies’ quick response and recovery of the stolen produce. “It’s not just about the money,” said one farm operator who wished to remain anonymous. “It’s about respecting our property and the work that goes into growing these crops. We’re glad the deputies were able to act quickly and get this resolved.”
As investigations continue, authorities encourage farm owners and residents in agricultural areas to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. The recovery of the avocados and the swift arrest of the suspect are being viewed as a success story for both local law enforcement and the farming community in Miami-Dade County.
Edel Perez remains in custody, and his case is pending further proceedings in the county court system. The MDSO said the investigation is complete regarding this specific incident, and no additional suspects have been identified. Authorities continue to monitor the area to ensure the safety and security of local farms and their produce, particularly during the busy holiday season when thefts can be more common.
