Broward County, Florida – Detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office are investigating a fatal shooting in Tamarac that claimed the life of a 16-year-old boy on New Year’s Eve. The incident occurred at approximately 10:10 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 31, when Broward County Regional Communications received a report of gunfire at a residence on 7913 N.W. 71st Avenue. Deputies from the Broward Sheriff’s Office, along with Tamarac Fire Rescue, quickly responded to the scene.

Upon arrival, first responders found Orlando Wedderburn suffering from gunshot wounds. He was immediately airlifted to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. An adult female at the scene suffered a graze wound and received treatment from emergency personnel on site. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation as detectives work to piece together the events leading up to the fatal incident.

BSO officials reported that an adult male present at the scene was detained for questioning. Detectives from the Homicide, Special Victims, and Crime Scene units were called in to conduct a thorough investigation. Officers noted that the alleged shooter remained at the scene, presented a self-defense claim, and was ultimately released after questioning. Authorities emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and all facts are still being verified.

According to BSO, once the investigation is complete, the case will be submitted to the Broward County State Attorney’s Office. At that point, prosecutors will determine whether criminal charges are warranted based on the evidence collected. “Detectives are working carefully to understand all aspects of the incident,” said a BSO spokesperson. “Our goal is to ensure a thorough and fair review before any decisions regarding charges are made.”

Residents in the Tamarac neighborhood expressed shock and sadness at the news, noting that incidents of gun violence in the area remain a growing concern. While the investigation continues, authorities have not released the names of the adult female or the adult male involved, citing ongoing inquiries and privacy considerations.

Investigators are expected to interview witnesses, review any surveillance footage from nearby homes or businesses, and analyze forensic evidence collected from the scene. BSO officials are urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward to assist in the investigation.

The tragic event underscores the continuing challenge of addressing violent incidents involving minors. Community leaders and law enforcement officials alike have emphasized the need for vigilance, communication, and preventative measures to help keep young residents safe.

At this time, detectives are focusing on gathering all relevant facts to provide a clear understanding of what led to the fatal shooting of Orlando Wedderburn. The case remains active, and further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses and decisions regarding potential criminal charges are made.
