South Florida – The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) has once again been recognized for its commitment to transit security, receiving the prestigious Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Gold Standard Award. The award, presented at the SFRTA Governing Board Meeting on Friday, January 23, 2026, marks the second time the regional transit agency has earned this high-level recognition, having previously been honored in 2013.

“This is a proud moment for our agency as we continue to prioritize the safety and security of all passengers and staff,” said David Dech, SFRTA Executive Director. “We are proud to be recognized for our efforts and remain committed to maintaining high security standards while delivering reliable regional transportation. We appreciate TSA’s partnership and the continued support of our security guards and law enforcement partners across the three counties served by Tri-Rail.”

The TSA Gold Standard Award is given to transit agencies that demonstrate excellence in maintaining security protocols and readiness. SFRTA’s recognition came following the agency’s most recent Baseline Assessment for Security Enhancement (BASE) review, a comprehensive evaluation designed to assess transit security programs across multiple categories. The BASE program, led by the TSA, examines 17 key areas identified by the transit community as essential for effective security practices.

SFRTA achieved high scores across all 17 categories, reflecting its strong commitment to preparedness and proactive security measures. The award highlights the agency’s efforts in implementing comprehensive security plans, training personnel, coordinating with law enforcement, and maintaining infrastructure to prevent and respond to potential threats.

Receiving the Gold Standard Award a second time underscores SFRTA’s sustained focus on continuous improvement in security operations. The agency works closely with local, state, and federal partners to ensure that its security practices remain up to date and effective in addressing evolving threats. This ongoing collaboration strengthens the safety of passengers and employees while promoting confidence in regional transit services.

The recognition also serves as a testament to the dedication of SFRTA’s security personnel and law enforcement partners who operate daily across the Tri-Rail system’s three-county service area. Their efforts are central to maintaining a safe and reliable transit environment for commuters, tourists, and other riders who rely on the agency’s services.

By receiving the TSA Gold Standard Award for a second time, SFRTA demonstrates that its commitment to transit security goes beyond routine compliance. The agency continues to set a benchmark for other transit organizations, showing that sustained attention to security, coupled with coordinated planning and innovation, can enhance public trust and overall system resilience.

As transit agencies nationwide face increasing security challenges, SFRTA’s achievement stands as a model for excellence. The award reflects the agency’s dedication to protecting both people and infrastructure while maintaining dependable regional transportation services for the communities it serves.
