Kat González scores late equalizer against her former club as Fort Lauderdale United FC earns thrilling draw at Carolina
Fort Lauderdale, Florida – Under the lights at American Legion Memorial Stadium on Saturday night, a tightly contested match delivered both drama and redemption. Fort Lauderdale United FC battled to a 1–1 draw against Carolina Ascent FC in a result that felt as emotional as it was important, highlighted by a late equalizer from midfielder Kat González against the club where she once played.
The result left Fort Lauderdale with a record of 4-9-8 and 20 points in the standings, while Carolina moved to 9-7-6 with 33 points. More importantly for the Florida side, the draw added another valuable point as the team attempts to build momentum heading into the final stretch of the season.
For González, the evening carried extra meaning. Returning to North Carolina to face her former club, she delivered a decisive moment late in the match — her first goal since joining Fort Lauderdale. The strike not only leveled the game but also capped a determined performance from a team that refused to back down.
Fast paced start sets tone for competitive night
The early stages suggested Fort Lauderdale had arrived with attacking intent. Just six minutes into the match, González tested Carolina’s defense with a probing move that hinted at the attacking pressure to come. Ten minutes later, she again surged forward, creating another opportunity as Fort Lauderdale sought to break the deadlock.
In the 14th minute, the visitors nearly found their breakthrough. A sharp attacking sequence unfolded as Kiara Locklear, Jasmine Hamid and captain Sh’nia Gordon combined to produce one of the most dangerous chances of the first half. Gordon’s shot forced a strong save from Carolina’s goalkeeper, denying Fort Lauderdale an early lead.
While the attack pushed forward, the defense remained equally important. Rookie defender Maggie Mace, appearing in just her third professional match, delivered a pair of confident defensive stops in the 26th minute. Her composure and physical presence helped stabilize the back line against Carolina’s pressure.
Behind that defensive effort stood goalkeeper Haley Craig, who had already been in impressive form coming into the game after recording 14 saves across the previous two matches. She added another highlight to that run in the 33rd minute, making a spectacular save that preserved the scoreless tie.
End to end action before halftime
Fort Lauderdale continued pressing as the half progressed. Much of the attacking energy flowed through Hamid, whose runs in the 35th, 40th and 41st minutes repeatedly pushed Carolina’s defense deeper into its own half.
Still, the most dramatic moment before the break came in stoppage time. With Carolina threatening to take the lead, Gordon produced one of the defining defensive plays of the match. The Fort Lauderdale captain cleared a dangerous ball off the goal line, ensuring the teams headed to halftime locked at 0-0.
It was the kind of play that often goes unnoticed in score sheets but can completely alter the trajectory of a match.
Tactical adjustments and rising tension
At the start of the second half, interim head coach Paul Jennison made his first change, bringing on midfielder Julia Grosso in place of Mace, who had received a yellow card during the opening period.
The second half quickly became more physical and intense. Midfielder Abi Hugh emerged as a key contributor early after the restart, delivering two well-placed crosses into the Carolina penalty area from the left flank.
Despite Fort Lauderdale’s pressure, Carolina nearly took control of the match midway through the half. In the 54th minute, Craig produced perhaps the most remarkable moment of the night. The goalkeeper stopped a point-blank shot and then immediately denied the rebound, making an improbable double save that stunned the crowd and kept the match scoreless.
But Carolina eventually found its breakthrough. In the 64th minute, the home side converted from the penalty spot when Corbin stepped up and scored, giving Carolina a 1-0 advantage.
González delivers late response
With the clock winding down, Fort Lauderdale refused to settle. The visitors increased their attacking urgency, pushing forward in search of a late equalizer.
That moment arrived in the 82nd minute.
Gordon initiated the play with a powerful run down the right side before sending a precise cross into the box. Locklear controlled the pass and quickly redirected the ball backward toward González, who had arrived at the top of the area.
Without hesitation, González struck the ball first-time with her right foot. The shot stayed low and slipped into the bottom left corner of the net, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.
The midfielder celebrated with a familiar shrug — a signature moment that symbolized both relief and satisfaction. Scoring against her former team only added another layer of emotion to the goal.
Late chance nearly seals victory
Even after leveling the score, Fort Lauderdale continued pushing for more.
In the final moments of the match, Gordon again created danger, delivering a pass into the box that found Locklear. The forward rose to meet the ball with a header that seemed destined for goal, but the attempt sailed just over the crossbar.
Moments later, the final whistle confirmed the 1-1 draw.
Building momentum for the final stretch
While the result was not a victory, the point carries significance for Fort Lauderdale. The team has now earned points twice in its last five matches and appears to be gradually building momentum as the season approaches its closing stages.
The focus now shifts back home.
Fort Lauderdale United will return to the field on April 6 at Beyond Bancard Field, where it will face DC Power FC. The match marks the team’s first home appearance in 23 days.
The two clubs have met only once during the 2025-26 campaign so far. That earlier matchup, played on November 12 in Washington, ended in a loss for Fort Lauderdale.
This time, the team hopes the home crowd will help fuel a different outcome.
With only a handful of matches remaining and playoff hopes still alive in the Gainbridge Super League race, every point matters. The upcoming stretch of home games could ultimately determine whether Fort Lauderdale extends its season into the postseason.
For now, though, the image that lingers from Saturday night is González’s equalizing strike — a moment of calm precision that turned a difficult road match into a valuable point and a memory she will not soon forget.
