Teens and girls with disabilities build lasting friendships and confidence ahead of the 13th annual Miss Arc Broward pageant this May

South Florida – In a world where confidence is often built step by step, moment by moment, a group of young girls in South Florida is preparing for something far more meaningful than a traditional pageant. This May, sixteen teens and girls with intellectual and developmental disabilities will take the stage, not just to compete, but to celebrate growth, friendship, and self-discovery.

Set for Sunday, May 17, at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale, the 13th annual Miss Arc Broward Pageant promises to be both a heartfelt and uplifting event. Designed as a family- and sensory-friendly experience, the pageant welcomes participants and audiences alike into a space where differences are embraced and individuality shines. While there will be sashes and crowns, organizers emphasize that the real reward lies in the journey leading up to the event.

For months now, the contestants—ranging in age from just 6 to 17—have been immersed in a process that goes far beyond rehearsals. Coming from communities across Broward and Palm Beach counties, these young participants have been building connections, learning new skills, and gaining a sense of belonging that many say is life-changing.

“The Miss Arc Broward Pageant is so much more than a competition. For contestants, it is a culmination of four months of creating meaningful connections and feeling a true sense of belonging,” said Julie Price, Arc Broward president and CEO. “The events leading up to the pageant help build confidence, foster self-expression and present a platform where girls and young women with disabilities can discover their strengths in an environment that celebrates who they are.”

That sense of belonging is not created overnight. Each contestant is paired with a teen ambassador—students from more than a dozen local high schools—who serve as mentors and supporters throughout the process. These ambassadors are not just helpers; they become partners in the experience. Together, they practice choreography, prepare for the opening number, and participate in social activities designed to nurture confidence and teamwork.

The relationships that form along the way often become one of the most powerful aspects of the pageant. For many of the girls, it is a rare opportunity to step into the spotlight with encouragement from peers who are fully invested in their success. For the ambassadors, it is a chance to learn empathy, patience, and the importance of inclusion.

The contestants themselves reflect a wide range of backgrounds and personalities. From Coral Springs and Tamarac to Weston, Davie, Hollywood, and beyond, each participant brings her own story. Some are stepping onto a stage for the very first time, while others are returning with a bit more confidence than before. Regardless of experience, they share a common thread—a willingness to grow and to be seen.

As the event draws closer, excitement continues to build not only among the participants but also within the broader community. Organizers are encouraging local residents, school groups, and organizations to attend and show their support. Cheer squads are being formed, giving attendees the chance to actively root for contestants and create an atmosphere filled with energy and positivity.

Students who participate in these cheer squads can even earn community service hours, adding another layer of engagement to the event. It is a reminder that the pageant is not just about those on stage, but also about those in the audience who help create a supportive environment.

Behind the scenes, the pageant also serves a larger purpose. Proceeds from ticket sales go directly toward supporting Arc Broward’s 24 programs, which provide services for individuals with disabilities across all stages of life—from preschool children to adults and seniors. In this way, every ticket purchased contributes to a broader mission of inclusion and support.

The event has also drawn significant backing from a wide array of sponsors, including major companies, healthcare organizations, and community groups. Their involvement underscores the importance of initiatives like this one—programs that not only uplift individuals but also strengthen the fabric of the community.

Tickets for the pageant are currently available, with options for individuals and groups. Organizers hope to see a full house, not just for the sake of attendance, but to ensure that each contestant feels the warmth and encouragement of a cheering crowd.

As the date approaches, the focus remains firmly on the participants and the journey they have undertaken. For these sixteen girls, the stage at The Parker will represent more than a performance space. It will be a place where fears are faced, friendships are celebrated, and confidence takes center stage.

And when the lights come up and the music begins, the audience will witness something far deeper than a pageant. They will see young individuals stepping into their own, supported by a community that believes in their potential—every step of the way.
