The Color Purple musical brings powerful story of resilience to the Pompano Beach Cultural Center
Pompano Beach, Florida – Audiences in South Florida will soon have the opportunity to experience a new stage production of The Color Purple as the Pompano Beach Cultural Center prepares to host the regional premiere of the celebrated musical later this summer.
Based on The Color Purple, the production brings to life the unforgettable story first introduced in Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and later adapted into the acclaimed 1985 film directed by Steven Spielberg. The musical version has become widely recognized for its emotional storytelling and rich musical arrangements that blend multiple genres into a deeply moving theatrical experience.
Set across four decades, the story follows Celie, a young woman who survives years of pain, hardship, and injustice while searching for her voice and identity. Through friendship, love, and personal strength, she begins a long journey toward freedom and self-worth.
The stage adaptation combines dramatic storytelling with an energetic musical score rooted in jazz, gospel, blues, ragtime, and African music traditions. The result is both intimate and uplifting, carrying audiences through moments of heartbreak, resilience, and hope.
The South Florida production is expected to draw theatergoers from across the region, particularly fans of the original novel and film adaptation. Organizers say the musical’s themes of perseverance and empowerment continue to resonate strongly with modern audiences.
Performances are scheduled throughout late June 2026, with both afternoon and evening showings planned at the cultural center.
Showtimes include June 20 at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., followed by a matinee performance on June 21 at 3 p.m. Additional evening performances are scheduled for June 24, June 25, and June 26 at 7:30 p.m.
The production will continue on June 27 with performances at both 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., before concluding on June 28 with a final 3 p.m. showing.
Over the years, “The Color Purple” has remained one of the most celebrated stories in American literature and theater, praised for its emotional depth and unforgettable characters. Its transition from page to screen and eventually to the stage has introduced the story to multiple generations of audiences.
Now, with its South Florida premiere arriving at the Pompano Beach Cultural Center, local theater fans will have the chance to experience the production live through music, performance, and storytelling that continues to leave a lasting impact decades after the original novel was first published.
