Florida earns top spot in the nation for education freedom according to the 2025 EdChoice Friedman Index

Tallahassee, Florida – In a major achievement for the Sunshine State, the Florida Department of Education has proudly announced that Florida has earned the highest score on the 2025 EdChoice Friedman Index, marking the state as a leader in school choice and educational freedom.

With a score of 77, Florida outshines all other states in the nation, reflecting the state’s dedication to expanding educational opportunities for families. This top ranking highlights Florida’s broad range of school choice options, including the implementation of Education Savings Accounts (ESAs) that allow families to use funds for a variety of educational services.

“Today, Florida posted yet another #1 ranking,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “EdChoice has named Florida #1 in education freedom for having the most robust school choice options in the nation. Education is best with competition and Freedom!”

The state’s impressive score is a testament to years of effort to provide families with more control over their children’s education. Florida’s diverse school choice programs give students the flexibility to attend charter schools, private schools, or participate in home education. The EdChoice Friedman Index evaluates states based on three key criteria: student eligibility for choice programs, options for using school choice funds, and the parity of those funds with traditional school funding. Florida’s score of 77 places it far ahead of other states. The state of Arkansas, which ranks second, scored 60, while Alabama ranked third with a score of 59. This puts Florida significantly ahead, showing the depth of the state’s commitment to educational choice.
