Oakland Park, Florida – A tragic incident unfolded Saturday evening in Oakland Park when a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle along Northwest 31st Avenue. Authorities say the collision occurred just after 8:20 p.m. on April 12, leaving one person dead and prompting an ongoing investigation by the Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit.

According to a statement from investigators, the crash happened in the 4300 block of Northwest 31st Avenue, a busy stretch that sees regular traffic through the area. The pedestrian, identified as Shannell Smith, had been attempting to cross the roadway from east to west but was not using a designated crosswalk. She was struck by a 2018 Mercedes C300 traveling northbound.

The driver of the vehicle, 25-year-old Ethan Dargon, reportedly came to an immediate stop following the collision. Authorities say Dargon exited his vehicle to check on Smith and then pulled into a nearby parking lot to wait for law enforcement officers to arrive.

Emergency responders from Oakland Park Fire Rescue and deputies from the Broward Sheriff’s Office arrived on scene shortly after the crash was reported. Despite their efforts, Smith was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

While pedestrian-related crashes often raise concerns about reckless driving or driver impairment, investigators stated that neither excessive speed nor impairment appear to have played a role in this case. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated fully with authorities.

At this time, the Broward Sheriff’s Office has not issued any citations or charges, and the case remains open as the Traffic Homicide Unit continues to collect evidence and witness statements.

This fatal collision has renewed attention to pedestrian safety, especially in areas where there are limited or poorly marked crosswalks. Residents of Oakland Park have previously raised concerns about stretches of roadway where pedestrians often attempt to cross outside of designated zones due to long distances between intersections or crossings.

Authorities urge pedestrians to always use marked crosswalks whenever possible and to remain aware of traffic patterns. At the same time, they encourage drivers to remain vigilant and cautious, particularly in residential or mixed-use areas where foot traffic is common.

The identity of the victim, Shannell Smith, and the details surrounding the moments leading up to the crash are part of what investigators will continue to analyze as they work to understand what led to this heartbreaking loss of life.

As the investigation continues, no further details have been released. Anyone with information related to the crash is encouraged to contact the Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit.

This incident marks another somber reminder of the importance of roadway safety for both drivers and pedestrians alike.
