Fort Lauderdale, Florida – Drivers in Fort Lauderdale should plan ahead for upcoming traffic changes as a portion of NW 21st Avenue is scheduled to close starting Thursday, May 1, 2025, due to major infrastructure work related to the Prospect Lake Clean Water Center Water Main Project.

According to city officials, the closure marks the beginning of Phase 6 of the ongoing project, led by David Mancini and Sons, Inc. Construction crews will begin installing a 48-inch water main at the intersection of NW 21st Avenue and Prospect Road, an effort that is expected to enhance water delivery and support future clean water initiatives in the area.

As part of the work, northbound lanes on NW 21st Avenue will be closed for approximately two weeks, causing significant traffic rerouting in the area.

To help reduce delays and ensure public safety, the city has outlined specific detour routes:

• Northbound traffic should turn left onto Prospect Road, then right onto Commercial Blvd.
• Westbound drivers on Prospect Road should continue west and then turn right onto Commercial Blvd.
• Eastbound drivers should follow Prospect Road east and turn left onto Powerline Road.

The city is urging drivers to follow posted signs and allow for extra time when traveling through the area. “Thank you for your patience and cooperation!” the notice stated, acknowledging the inconvenience but stressing the long-term benefits of the project.

The water main upgrade is a critical step in improving water infrastructure, increasing system reliability, and preparing the city for future growth. While temporary disruptions are unavoidable, the work is part of a broader strategy to modernize utilities and reduce the risk of pipe failures or water service interruptions.

Residents and commuters are encouraged to stay informed through the city’s official channels and plan alternate routes in advance to avoid potential delays.
