Water main repairs continue at SE 1st Avenue and Riverwalk as Fort Lauderdale works to upgrade infrastructure

Fort Lauderdale, Florida – The City of Fort Lauderdale, in partnership with Southern Underground Industries, is currently working to repair a key section of its water distribution system in the heart of downtown. The construction project, which began on Monday, April 28, 2025, is focused on the intersection of SE 1st Avenue and the north side of the Riverwalk.
This important project involves repairing a 16-inch water main and restoring the surrounding area once the work is complete. The upgrade is part of the city’s ongoing efforts to ensure a reliable and modern water infrastructure for its residents and businesses.
However, progress has not come without challenges. Crews ran into unexpected conflicts with underground utility lines, which forced changes in both the construction approach and overall timeline. As a result, city officials now expect the project to wrap up by Friday, May 16, 2025, if no further complications arise.
Work is taking place during standard weekday hours—Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.—but some overnight activity is planned as well. On the night of Tuesday, May 6, crews will be on-site from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. to carry out necessary tasks that can’t be completed during daytime hours.
This overnight work may affect water service for some nearby properties. According to city officials, “Nearby properties may experience water service interruptions during this time. A precautionary boil water notice will be in effect beginning at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, May 7.” The Public Works Department has already informed affected property owners directly, and a map showing the impacted area is available online at fortlauderdale.gov/publicnotices.
Pedestrian traffic is also being carefully managed during construction. While the Riverwalk near SE 1st Avenue is partially closed, foot traffic is still permitted in the area. Officials are urging pedestrians to be cautious and to follow posted signage for detours or safe walkways.
As with many infrastructure projects, weather conditions or other unforeseen issues may still impact the schedule. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and check the city’s official website for updates.
With the finish line now in sight, the City of Fort Lauderdale is committed to minimizing disruptions while ensuring that the water system is dependable and up to modern standards. Once completed, the repairs are expected to improve service reliability and reduce the risk of future water main issues in this busy downtown area.
