Broward County calls on residents to help save shelter animals as overcrowding reaches crisis level

Broward County, Florida – Broward County Animal Care has declared an emergency situation, calling it a “911” for pets, as its shelters face an unprecedented overcrowding crisis. With kennel space at full capacity and new animals arriving every day, the county’s animal welfare agency is urging the community to take immediate action—through adoption, fostering, or simply spreading the word.

“We are in a space crisis,” declared Doug Brightwell, Broward County Animal Care Director. “Our shelter is filled with amazing pets – dogs and cats of all ages and personalities – who are just waiting for a second chance. We’re asking our community to open their hearts and homes to help us create the space we desperately need. The power of community is real. Even if you cannot adopt or foster, simply sharing our posts or telling a friend could save a life.”

The message is clear: the situation is critical, and without help from the public, more pets may be at risk. Staff members are working tirelessly to care for the animals, but with intake numbers rising and limited physical space, the strain is growing daily.

To help ease the burden, Animal Care is offering several ways the public can make a difference. First and foremost is adoption. All animals in the shelter are fully vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and microchipped. Even better, all adoption fees have been waived, making it easier than ever for residents to welcome a new pet into their home.

For those who may not be ready to commit to adoption, fostering is another option. A foster stay of even a few days can free up space and reduce stress for both the animal and the shelter staff. It’s a small act that can have a big impact.

Community members are also encouraged to spread the message. By sharing the link PetAdoptions.Broward.org on social media or with friends and neighbors, people can help raise awareness and increase the chances of getting pets into loving homes.

The shelter houses animals of all sizes, ages, and personalities—from playful puppies and kittens to calm, senior companions. Every pet deserves a chance at a better life, and the shelter hopes that public involvement can provide just that.

In a time of urgency, Broward County is counting on its community. A shared post, a temporary foster, or a forever home—all can be life-saving actions for pets who have nowhere else to go.
