Broward detectives investigate deadly motorcycle crash that claimed one life in Pompano Beach

Pompano Beach, Florida – A deadly crash involving a motorcycle and an SUV has prompted a full investigation by the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) Traffic Homicide Unit. The incident, which unfolded in broad daylight on Wednesday, May 28, claimed the life of a motorcyclist and ended with four people temporarily fleeing the crash scene.

According to BSO detectives, the collision happened around 1:51 p.m. along West Atlantic Boulevard in Pompano Beach, at the busy intersection with Northwest 31st Avenue. The initial findings point to a serious chain of events that turned tragic in just seconds.

Authorities say 27-year-old Katerin Cisneros-Moreno was driving a 2014 Mazda CX-5 westbound in the center-thru lane of West Atlantic Boulevard. She had three passengers inside. At the same time, a motorcyclist aboard a 2023 Harley-Davidson Sportster was heading eastbound in the left-turn lane, approaching the same intersection from the opposite direction.

Detectives believe the fatal impact happened when the motorcyclist began to turn left, attempting to cross the westbound lanes. As the motorcycle passed through the intersection, the front passenger side of the Mazda slammed into the right side of the motorcycle in what officials describe as a T-bone-type crash.

The force of the crash violently threw the motorcyclist northwest off the bike. Both the motorcycle and the SUV veered off the roadway and ended up on a sidewalk at the northwest corner of the intersection. Investigators say the motorcyclist was struck a second time after the initial impact and ultimately came to rest under the SUV.

In the chaotic aftermath, the driver of the Mazda and her three passengers reportedly tried to flee the scene on foot. However, deputies from BSO who had witnessed the crash quickly intervened. With assistance from BSO Pompano Beach units, all four individuals were detained shortly after the collision.

Pompano Beach Fire Rescue rushed to the scene and managed to extricate the motorcyclist from underneath the SUV. The victim was taken to Broward Health Medical Center, but despite emergency efforts, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The name of the deceased motorcyclist has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin. Meanwhile, the circumstances surrounding the crash and the attempted flight of the occupants of the Mazda remain under active investigation by BSO’s Traffic Homicide detectives.

As the community absorbs the shock of another roadway fatality, BSO is asking any witnesses or individuals with additional information to come forward.
