Authorities make arrest after shocking attack on elderly passenger on Broward County bus

Broward County, Florida – In a shocking and unprovoked assault on a Broward County Transit bus, a 33-year-old man has been arrested for brutally attacking an elderly passenger and stealing his phone. The crime occurred earlier this year in Pompano Beach, leaving the victim injured and unconscious.

Maurice Bradwell, the suspect, was arrested by detectives from the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) Pompano Beach District on Friday, July 11. The arrest came after an intense investigation into the incident, which occurred on March 5, 2025, around 12:39 p.m. on a transit bus near the 600 block of Southwest 12th Avenue. The unprovoked attack shocked witnesses, leaving the community in disbelief and prompting a swift response from law enforcement.

According to investigators, Bradwell approached the elderly victim, who was quietly seated alone on the bus, and suddenly began shouting at him. Bradwell’s aggressive behavior escalated quickly as he stood in a threatening posture, cursing at the victim for reasons that remain unclear. The tension prompted the bus driver to stop the vehicle and ask passengers to disembark. It was at this point that the victim, seemingly confused by the sudden stop, approached the bus driver to inquire about the delay.

Without any warning, Bradwell viciously attacked the elderly man. The assault knocked the victim’s phone out of his hand, and as the elderly man fell to the ground, he was rendered unconscious. Bradwell didn’t stop there—he quickly grabbed the victim’s phone and fled the scene, leaving the elderly man on the floor.

Emergency responders, including BSO deputies and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue, were called to the scene. Upon arrival, they found the victim with multiple injuries and rushed him to Broward Health North for treatment. Fortunately, despite the severity of the assault, the victim’s injuries are not life-threatening.

The investigation into the assault and robbery intensified as BSO detectives worked to track down the suspect. On July 7, detectives released still images from the incident in the hope that the public could help identify the attacker. The community responded swiftly, with several tips coming in to Broward Crime Stoppers. These tips eventually led investigators to Bradwell, who was apprehended on the morning of July 11 near the 200 block of North Powerline Road in Pompano Beach.

Bradwell now faces serious charges, including one count of aggravated battery on a person over 65 years of age and one count of aggravated robbery. The nature of the attack, combined with the fact that it targeted an elderly person, has added to the public outrage surrounding the crime. The arrest has brought some sense of justice to the victim and the community, though many are still grappling with the senseless violence that unfolded on the bus that afternoon.

Detectives praised the role that the public played in identifying Bradwell, saying that without the help of witnesses and Crime Stoppers tips, his capture may have taken longer. “This case shows the power of community involvement,” said one investigator. “Thanks to the public’s support, we were able to quickly locate and arrest the suspect.”

This case serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of elderly individuals, particularly when they are in public spaces. The brutality of the assault on an innocent passenger has shaken many in the Pompano Beach community, and it underscores the need for continued vigilance when it comes to protecting those who may be more susceptible to harm.

As the case progresses, authorities are urging anyone with additional information about the incident or Bradwell’s activities to come forward. The Broward Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate and is committed to ensuring that justice is served for the elderly victim who endured this unprovoked and violent attack.
