Weston, Florida – The City of Weston is celebrating a historic moment as Mayor Margaret “Peggy” Brown, the city’s first female mayor, has officially been sworn in as President of the Florida League of Mayors (FLM) for the 2025–2026 term. This appointment comes after her election as President Elect in August 2024 and underscores the strong confidence her peers across Florida have in her leadership and vision for municipal governance.

Mayor Brown spent her term as President Elect (2024–2025) working closely with then FLM President Nancy Miller of Daytona Beach Shores, gaining valuable insight into statewide initiatives and establishing connections with mayors across the state. “This is an incredible opportunity to continue learning from my colleagues and to bring new ideas back to Weston,” Mayor Brown said. Her elevation to the presidency is expected to strengthen Weston’s voice in legislative matters and enhance collaboration with municipalities throughout Florida.

Founded in 2005, the Florida League of Mayors is a member-driven nonprofit organization designed to support, educate, and connect mayors across the state. Governed by a Board of Directors, FLM promotes leadership development, public service, and the exchange of practical solutions that help mayors address challenges in their communities. The League’s core values—Service, Collaboration, Respect, Influence, Integrity, Commitment, Communication, Accountability, and Education—guide every program and initiative it undertakes.

One of the League’s main focuses is education. FLM provides workshops, regional meetings, Zoom webinars, and specialized forums on a wide range of municipal topics. These include grant funding, infrastructure, communication, public speaking, running effective meetings, and working with other municipal officials. These opportunities equip mayors with the tools they need to lead their communities effectively.

In addition to educational programming, FLM offers city-focused initiatives such as the City Catalyst Grants, which provide up to $2,500 to support innovative community projects. Past examples include mentoring programs, public garden projects, and park enhancements. The “If I Were Elected Mayor” program invites middle school students to explore the impact of Home Rule in local governance, with winners receiving recognition and gift cards. The Innovation Awards Program highlights municipalities that implement cost-saving, creative, and citizen-friendly initiatives, celebrating forward-thinking approaches in municipal management.

Advocacy is another pillar of the League’s work. FLM collaborates closely with the Florida League of Cities legislative team, encouraging mayors to participate in advocacy efforts such as Home Rule Heroes and Local Voices United Ambassador Program. These initiatives amplify local voices at both state and federal levels, ensuring that municipal priorities are heard and addressed in legislative decision-making.

Networking is emphasized throughout the organization’s calendar of events, from annual conferences to Legislative Action Days. Mayors, deputy mayors, and vice mayors are encouraged to exchange ideas and best practices, fostering a culture of collaboration that benefits municipalities across Florida.

With Mayor Brown at the helm of FLM, Weston’s priorities are likely to gain heightened visibility and influence in statewide discussions. Her leadership promises not only to showcase the achievements and needs of Weston but also to allow the city to learn from innovative programs and initiatives implemented in communities across the state. As Mayor Brown begins her term, both Weston residents and Florida’s municipal leaders can anticipate a year of collaboration, advocacy, and shared progress.

“This is a tremendous honor, and I look forward to working with mayors across the state to strengthen our communities and serve our residents better,” Mayor Brown said, reflecting on her new role. Her presidency marks a milestone for Weston and an opportunity to elevate the city’s contributions to statewide municipal leadership.

This step forward not only highlights Mayor Brown’s dedication but also reinforces the Florida League of Mayors’ mission to connect, educate, and empower municipal leaders throughout the state, creating a stronger, more collaborative network for all of Florida’s cities.
