Pompano Beach, Florida – Authorities in Pompano Beach have announced the arrest and indictment of two men in connection with a 2019 shooting that claimed the life of 32-year-old Clarens Calixte. Following extensive investigative work, law enforcement officials have charged Benson Blaise and Derrick Jules with first-degree murder.

The fatal incident occurred just after 3 a.m. on Friday, December 20, 2019. Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call at 327 S.W. Second Court in Pompano Beach, where they found Calixte unresponsive with gunshot wounds. Pompano Beach Fire Rescue quickly transported him to Broward Health North, where he was pronounced dead.

“The investigation into this tragic case required detailed evidence gathering and careful coordination between multiple law enforcement units,” said a spokesperson for BSO. Over the years, homicide detectives worked diligently to piece together clues and testimonies, ultimately identifying the two suspects and securing a grand jury indictment.

Benson Blaise, who had been in custody at BSO’s Main Jail on unrelated charges, was formally booked following the indictment. Authorities said his connection to Calixte’s death emerged as a result of careful forensic analysis, interviews, and follow-up investigative work.

Derrick Jules, the second suspect, had been evading law enforcement until this past week. On Wednesday, September 10, a coordinated effort between BSO’s V.I.P.E.R. (Violence Intervention Proactive Enforcement Response) unit, the Fugitive unit, and the U.S. Marshals Service led to Jules’ apprehension in Tampa. The arrest reportedly took place without incident, bringing an end to several years of searching for the second suspect.

Both Blaise and Jules now face first-degree murder charges for the death of Calixte, marking a significant development in a case that has remained unsolved for nearly four years. Law enforcement officials emphasized that the arrests reflect their ongoing commitment to pursuing justice for victims and their families, even in cases that have remained open for years.

“This arrest is the result of persistent investigative efforts and strong collaboration across law enforcement agencies,” BSO representatives said. “While nothing can undo the loss suffered by Mr. Calixte’s family, holding those responsible accountable is a critical step in providing justice and closure.”

The community response to the announcement has been one of cautious relief. Residents have expressed appreciation for the persistence of law enforcement, recognizing that long-term investigations are often painstaking and require careful attention to detail.

Authorities noted that the investigation is ongoing, and additional information may be released as the case moves through the judicial process. Meanwhile, Blaise and Jules remain in custody and are expected to appear in court in the coming weeks as first-degree murder proceedings move forward.
