Broward Sheriff’s Office arrests suspect accused of targeting elderly residents through caregiver scam

Broward County, Florida – Detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) have arrested a suspect accused of targeting elderly residents by posing as a caregiver and stealing thousands of dollars from vulnerable victims. The arrest comes after a coordinated investigation that revealed a series of incidents in which the suspect gained access to elderly individuals’ homes under false pretenses, exploiting their trust for financial gain.

The investigation began in early October when BSO Deerfield Beach District detectives received a report involving an elderly male resident at the B’nai B’rith apartments in Deerfield Beach. According to investigators, a woman had gained entry to the victim’s apartment by posing as a caregiver. Once inside, she accessed the man’s bank card and made multiple withdrawals totaling $1,600. Using investigative methods, detectives identified the suspect as 26-year-old Jamisha Shamari Sylvain.

Further inquiry revealed that this case was not isolated. Sylvain allegedly carried out several similar scams targeting elderly residents, convincing them she was a professional caregiver authorized to enter their apartments. In some cases, she claimed to be a new caregiver assigned by the victims’ health insurance providers. Once inside, she reportedly took their debit cards and requested personal banking information under the guise of legitimate caregiving duties.

The arrest was the result of a coordinated effort involving multiple BSO units, including the Deerfield Beach District Criminal Investigations Unit (CI), the Crime Suppression Team (CST), and the Operational & Tactical Intelligence Center (OTIC). These units worked together to track Sylvain’s activities and gather sufficient evidence to obtain an arrest warrant. On Friday, December 19, Sylvain was taken into custody and booked into the BSO Main Jail. She faces multiple charges, including occupied burglary, elderly exploitation, criminal use of personal identification information, theft of credit card, and grand theft 65 or older.

BSO officials have emphasized that there may be additional victims and are urging anyone with information about similar incidents to come forward. “We believe there may be other victims who have not yet come forward,” a BSO spokesperson said. “Anyone with information should contact detectives immediately to help protect others from becoming victims.”

In light of these incidents, BSO is offering safety tips to help residents and their families avoid falling prey to caregiver scams. Authorities recommend verifying the identity, credentials, and references of anyone claiming to be a caregiver or home aide before granting them access to your home or financial information. Regularly monitoring bank statements and credit reports for unusual activity is also advised. Additionally, involving a trusted friend or family member in decisions about financial information can help prevent exploitation. Finally, BSO encourages residents to report suspicious activity as early as possible to minimize potential losses.

The investigation remains active, and officials continue to pursue any leads that could uncover additional victims. Residents within BSO jurisdiction who believe they may have been targeted or know someone who may have been victimized are asked to contact the non-emergency line at 954-764-HELP (4357). Detectives stressed that reporting such incidents promptly can make a critical difference in stopping the suspect and recovering stolen funds.

This case highlights the ongoing risk that elderly individuals face from scams involving imposters posing as caregivers. Authorities urge vigilance, careful verification, and communication among family members to ensure seniors are protected from similar crimes. The arrest of Sylvain marks an important step in holding those who exploit vulnerable residents accountable while reminding the community to remain alert to such fraudulent schemes.
