Deerfield Beach, Florida – A tragic incident unfolded Monday night in Deerfield Beach when a pedestrian was struck and killed by a Brightline train, authorities reported. The Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) confirmed that their Traffic Homicide Unit is leading the investigation into the fatal collision.

According to the preliminary investigation, the incident occurred shortly before 9:30 p.m. on February 2 near the intersection of West Hillsboro Boulevard and Dixie Highway. Broward County Regional Communications received reports of the crash involving a Brightline train in the area. Investigators say the man was walking westbound on the sidewalk and attempted to cross the east set of railroad tracks when the collision occurred. The pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Detectives from the BSO Traffic Homicide Unit responded to the location to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Early findings indicate that all safety equipment at the crossing was functioning properly at the time of the crash, suggesting that the collision may have involved other factors beyond equipment failure.

Authorities have not released the identity of the deceased, pending notification of next of kin. “The safety equipment was working properly,” BSO detectives confirmed during the on-scene investigation, emphasizing that all standard warnings and signals were active when the train struck the pedestrian.

This incident highlights the ongoing risks posed at railroad crossings, even in areas where safety measures are in place. BSO continues to remind the public to remain alert when approaching railroad tracks and to follow all safety signals to prevent similar tragedies.

The Traffic Homicide Unit is asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has additional information to contact them to assist in the investigation. As the investigation continues, authorities are working to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the pedestrian’s death.

The investigation remains active, and BSO has pledged to release further details as they become available.
