Tri-Rail records fourth busiest Saturday in history as Inter Miami CF match drives surge in passenger ridership on April 11

South Florida – A surge in soccer excitement is spilling far beyond the stadium in South Florida, and public transportation is feeling the impact in a big way. Tri-Rail has reported one of its busiest weekends in history, driven largely by fans traveling to see Inter Miami CF at their new home.

The commuter rail system recorded its fourth busiest Saturday ever on April 11, logging an impressive 9,668 rides. That figure marks a sharp increase from the previous weekend, April 4, when 9,131 यात्र were recorded—already enough to rank as the eighth busiest Saturday in Tri-Rail’s history. Together, the back-to-back surges point to a growing trend: fans are increasingly choosing trains over traffic when heading to matches.

At the center of this momentum is the team’s debut season at Miami Freedom Park, where matches are being held at Nu Stadium. The new venue, paired with improved transit access, is creating a smoother and more appealing game-day experience.

More than 1,000 supporters boarded Tri-Rail’s special event trains for each of the first two home games. For many, the convenience of avoiding traffic congestion and parking headaches has turned the train ride into an essential part of the outing itself.

“We have received so much positive feedback after these past two Saturdays from fans telling us about their amazing experience taking the train to the games,” said Diane Hernandez Del Calvo, SFRTA Interim Executive Director. “There was additional activity this past weekend with the Delray Affair in Palm Beach County, which further demonstrates how Tri-Rail can connect people to various events happening across the region.”

Indeed, the numbers reflect more than just soccer fever. The popular Delray Affair festival also contributed to the spike in ridership, showing how multiple events across South Florida can combine to boost transit usage. Still, the influence of Inter Miami’s early-season matches remains unmistakable.

One key advantage lies in location. The stadium sits within walking distance of the Miami Airport Station at the Miami Intermodal Center, allowing fans to step off the train and head straight to the action without complicated transfers. That ease of access is quickly reshaping how people think about attending major events in the region.

Looking ahead, Tri-Rail is leaning into this momentum. Special train services are planned for all weekend matches throughout the 2026 MLS season, with schedules designed to accommodate fans before and after games. For instance, return trains are set to depart roughly 45 minutes after the final whistle, giving riders enough time to exit the stadium and make their way back.

Affordability is another factor driving the shift. The system’s $5 Weekend Day Pass offers unlimited rides, making it an attractive option for groups and families. Even on weekdays, fares remain relatively low, ranging from $5 to $17.50 depending on distance traveled.

As attendance at matches continues to grow, Tri-Rail is evolving into more than just a means of transportation. For many fans, it has become part of the overall experience—an extension of the excitement that begins long before kickoff and lingers after the final whistle.

With another home match scheduled for April 25, expectations are high that the trend will continue. Officials are encouraging riders to plan ahead, check schedules, and take full advantage of the service.

In a region often defined by car travel, this shift is notable. The rails are not just carrying passengers—they are carrying the pulse of a growing sports culture, one packed train at a time.
