Florida schools invited to register for FWC School Fishing Program opening August 20 with opportunities to teach students fishing and conservation skills
Florida – Schools throughout Florida will soon have the opportunity to introduce students to fishing, outdoor education and conservation through the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s (FWC) School Fishing Program.
Registration for the program opens Thursday, August 20, at 8:00 a.m. EST and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. The program is designed to help schools create fishing clubs and provide students with hands-on learning experiences that connect them with Florida’s natural resources.
The FWC School Fishing Program offers participating schools a ready-to-use curriculum that club sponsors can use throughout the school year. Through classroom lessons and practical activities, students learn about a wide range of fishing-related topics, including ethical angling practices, fish habitats, aquatic conservation, fishing equipment and casting techniques.
The program focuses on helping young people develop important skills while also teaching them about the responsibility of protecting Florida’s waterways and wildlife. Students can explore both freshwater and saltwater fishing concepts, giving them a broad understanding of the state’s diverse fishing opportunities.
In addition to educational materials, a select number of schools will have the chance to receive fishing equipment and additional resources to help establish or expand their fishing clubs. These materials are intended to support schools as they introduce more students to the sport and encourage outdoor learning.
The program is open to brick-and-mortar public, private and charter schools across Florida. School officials interested in participating are encouraged to review the updated program Rules & Guidelines before completing registration. The review will help schools confirm eligibility and understand the requirements for taking part.
FWC officials say the School Fishing Program provides an opportunity for students to build a lasting connection with fishing while learning about conservation and responsible outdoor recreation. By combining education with hands-on experiences, the program aims to encourage the next generation of anglers to appreciate and protect Florida’s aquatic environments.
The initiative is supported by several partners that help make the program possible, including Coastal Conservation Association of Florida, Mud Hole Custom Tackle, Hobie Eyewear and Flambeau Outdoors. Their support provides valuable resources and assistance to participating schools and students.
The FWC encourages schools interested in joining the program to register early because available opportunities and equipment support are limited. Schools that secure a place in the program will be able to use the curriculum throughout the academic year and provide students with new opportunities to learn outside the traditional classroom setting.
For additional information about the School Fishing Program, schools and educators can contact Brandon Stys by email at [email protected] or by phone at 850-354-4798.
Through this initiative, Florida schools can help students discover the enjoyment of fishing while building awareness of conservation, wildlife protection and the importance of maintaining healthy aquatic ecosystems for future generations.
