Broward County Public Schools prepares for the 2026/27 school year with a week of back-to-school events and new student initiatives

Broward County, Florida – With the first day of classes just around the corner, Broward County Public Schools is putting the finishing touches on preparations for the 2026/27 academic year. More than 236,000 students are expected to return to classrooms on Monday, Aug. 10, as teachers, administrators, transportation crews, and support staff work across the District to ensure schools are ready for a successful start.

In the days leading up to the opening of school, the District will host a series of back-to-school media events designed to highlight new initiatives, student services, and the work taking place behind the scenes. The events will give media representatives an inside look at how schools prepare for the return of students while showcasing programs aimed at improving the educational experience for families throughout Broward County.

The first event on the schedule will spotlight school nutrition.

On Tuesday, Aug. 4, at 10 a.m., Broward County Public Schools Food and Nutrition Services will welcome media to South Broward High School in Hollywood for a tasting event featuring new cafeteria offerings for the upcoming school year.

The event will introduce a variety of nutritious, student-inspired menu items that will be served in school cafeterias during the 2026/27 school year. Among the featured selections are the Arroz Con Pollo Bowl, Chicken Lo Mein with Vegetable Eggroll, Plant-Based Fiesta Wrap with Hummus, Plant-Based Fiesta Salad with Hummus, Cajun Fries, Street Corn, Burrito Bowl, and Jalapeno Egg Patty.

District nutrition leaders and staff will be available for interviews, while media will have the opportunity to photograph and sample the new menu items that students can expect to see beginning this fall.

Attention will then shift from cafeterias to transportation as the District prepares one of its largest operational efforts before the first day of school.

On Wednesday, Aug. 5, beginning at 10:30 a.m., school bus operators will conduct practice runs from the BCPS Student Transportation & Fleet Services Central West Terminal in Davie.

The annual practice runs allow drivers to become familiar with their assigned routes before students board the buses. Operators review bus stops, identify possible traffic concerns, and make adjustments that can help improve efficiency and reliability once the school year begins.

This year’s transportation preparations also include a new safety enhancement. District officials say school buses will be equipped with automated cameras designed to increase safety around bus stops, providing additional protection for students during loading and unloading.

Media attending the event will be able to interview transportation officials and bus operators while capturing footage of buses departing the terminal and traveling along their assigned routes.

As the week continues, classroom preparations will move into their final stage.

On Thursday, Aug. 6, teachers returning to campuses will spend the day organizing classrooms, decorating learning spaces, arranging instructional materials, and making final preparations before students arrive. Media access will be available at selected schools through RSVP.

The event is intended to showcase the work educators complete before the academic year begins. Teachers and school administrators will be available for interviews while classrooms transform into welcoming learning environments designed to support student success from the very first day.

The final featured event of the week will focus on expanding career education opportunities.

On Friday, Aug. 7, at 10 a.m., Miramar High School will host Space Florida Academy Day to celebrate the launch of the Space Florida Academy program at nine Broward County Public Schools campuses.

The initiative will introduce students to career pathways in aerospace, aviation, and engineering through industry-connected educational experiences and hands-on STEM learning opportunities. District leaders say the academy is designed to expose students to high-demand career fields while strengthening partnerships between education and industry.

Media covering the event will have opportunities to interview District administrators, school leaders, students, and representatives from Space Florida. Demonstrations of interactive STEM activities and aerospace-related learning experiences will also be available for photography and video coverage.

Together, the week’s events highlight the many departments working simultaneously to prepare schools for opening day. While teachers organize classrooms and transportation staff finalize bus routes, food service teams are introducing updated meal options, and academic leaders are expanding specialized learning opportunities for students.

District officials say each effort is part of a larger commitment to ensuring that students and families begin the 2026/27 school year with the resources, services, and support they need. From classroom readiness and transportation safety to nutrition improvements and innovative career programs, preparations are taking place across Broward County ahead of the return of more than 236,000 students.
