Broward County plans mosquito spraying operation in parts of Davie and nearby areas

Broward County, Florida – Broward County officials are preparing to conduct aerial mosquito spraying in parts of Davie and several nearby communities following an increase in mosquito complaints and recent monitoring data showing higher mosquito activity.

The county’s Mosquito Control Section, part of the Public Works and Environmental Services Department, announced that aerial spraying for adult mosquitoes will take place overnight between Saturday, August 1, and Tuesday, August 4, 2026, depending on weather conditions and other unexpected factors. The operation is scheduled during the early morning hours, between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m., when mosquito activity is typically higher and fewer people are outdoors.

The planned spraying will cover portions of Davie, Southwest Ranches, Pembroke Pines, Miramar, and Weston. The operation is aimed at reducing populations of adult mosquitoes that have become a growing concern for residents in the affected areas.

According to county officials, the spraying effort is specifically targeting nuisance mosquitoes connected to the seasonal migration of saltmarsh mosquitoes from the Everglades. These mosquitoes are known for their ability to travel long distances and their aggressive biting behavior, sometimes moving several miles away from their breeding locations.

While these mosquitoes can create uncomfortable conditions for residents and outdoor activities, officials noted that they are not known to spread diseases such as Zika or Dengue. The main concern is the large number of mosquitoes and the impact they can have on daily life in affected neighborhoods.

Residents who have breathing difficulties are advised to remain indoors during the spraying period as a precaution. In addition, individuals who are registered with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services as chemically sensitive will receive advance notification before the spraying takes place.

Broward County’s Mosquito Control Section uses several methods to manage mosquito populations throughout the county, including backpack treatments, truck-based spraying, and aerial operations. Decisions about where and when to conduct treatments are based on mosquito surveillance information, population levels, and service requests submitted by residents.

Officials are also reminding community members that they can play an important role in limiting mosquito activity by removing standing water around their homes and properties. Small amounts of water collected in containers, plant trays, outdoor equipment, or other areas can become breeding sites for mosquitoes.

Residents who need mosquito control assistance can request service by calling 311 or by submitting a Mosquito Service Request Form through Broward County. The county encourages residents to report areas with mosquito problems so crews can better respond to local concerns.

The mosquito control operation is part of the broader work performed by the Highway and Bridge Maintenance Division, which oversees a wide range of public services, including county road and highway maintenance, sidewalks, stormwater systems, trees, and mosquito control efforts.

The division operates under the Broward County Board of County Commissioners and continues to monitor mosquito conditions across the county to determine when additional treatments may be necessary.

For more information, residents can contact the Highway and Bridge Maintenance Division during regular business hours at 954-357-6040. County officials said mosquito control activities will continue to be guided by surveillance results and community needs as officials work to reduce mosquito problems throughout Broward County.
