Fort Lauderdale, Florida – One person was hospitalized with a gunshot wound and several people were detained after a shooting early Sunday morning in Fort Lauderdale, according to police.

The incident happened on Southwest Third Avenue near Southwest Second Street, where officers were already responding to a fight. Police said officers were in the area attempting to break up the disturbance when the situation suddenly took a more serious turn.

While dealing with the fight, officers heard a gunshot. Investigators then moved quickly to determine what had happened and who may have been involved.

Fort Lauderdale Police said multiple people were detained at the scene shortly after the gunshot was heard. Officers also recovered a firearm during their response. Police have not publicly identified the people who were detained or said whether any of them have been formally arrested or charged.

The shooting victim was not taken to the hospital directly from the scene, according to investigators. Instead, a man later arrived at Plantation General Hospital suffering from a gunshot wound.

Despite being shot, the man’s injuries were described as not life-threatening. No additional information about his condition was immediately released.

The sequence of events remained under investigation as authorities worked to determine exactly how the shooting occurred and what led to the gun being fired. Police had initially been dealing with a fight before the gunshot was reported, making the circumstances surrounding the shooting an important part of the investigation.

The presence of a recovered firearm and the detention of multiple people could help investigators establish what happened, although police have not released further details about the weapon or identified a suspected shooter.

Authorities also have not disclosed whether the shooting was connected to the earlier fight or whether anyone involved in the disturbance knew the injured man.

The investigation was ongoing Sunday as Fort Lauderdale police continued working to piece together the events that unfolded on Southwest Third Avenue. Further information about possible charges or additional arrests is expected as detectives determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
