Fort Lauderdale United FC falls 2-1 to Dallas Trinity FC despite strong second-half comeback effort

Fort Lauderdale, Florida – Fort Lauderdale United FC returned home Friday night looking to end its early-season struggles, but a strong second-half push was not enough to overcome an early deficit against Dallas Trinity FC.

Playing at Amerant Bank Field in its first home match in three weeks, Fort Lauderdale fell 2-1 to Dallas Trinity. The result leaves Fort Lauderdale with a 1-4-0 record and three points after five matches, while Dallas improved to 3-2-1 with 10 points.

The home side had chances late in the match and changed the pace of the game after halftime. Sh’nia Gordon scored for the second straight match, giving Fort Lauderdale a much-needed lift in the 60th minute. Kiara Locklear provided the assist, extending her lead as the club’s all-time assist leader.

Still, Dallas had built too large a cushion during the opening portion of the game.

Fort Lauderdale began the match with an aggressive approach. Locklear, Farrah Walters and Gordon repeatedly made runs on the wings as the team looked to put pressure on the Dallas defense. The visitors, however, were able to keep the game under control during the early stages.

The opening 30 minutes produced only two shots, both by Dallas. Neither side found much rhythm going forward until Dallas finally broke through in the 32nd minute.

Nicole Vernis was active in the middle of the field for Fort Lauderdale during the first half, helping the team build attacks and create opportunities. But Dallas took advantage of a high-arcing corner kick to open the scoring.

The situation became even more difficult for Fort Lauderdale immediately after halftime. Dallas doubled its advantage less than a minute into the second half, leaving the home team with a two-goal deficit and little room for error.

Then came the turning point.

In the 60th minute, Locklear delivered a through ball to Gordon, who made the most of the opportunity. Gordon sent the goalkeeper the wrong way before firing a powerful shot into the near post.

The goal changed the feel of the match. Fort Lauderdale suddenly had more energy and began pushing forward with greater urgency.

Head coach Tyrone Mears responded by making three substitutions. Kelli Van Treeck, Abi Hugh and Emily Thompson entered the match as Fort Lauderdale increased its efforts to find an equalizer.

The changes quickly produced opportunities. In the 66th minute, Van Treeck came close with a shot from close range that was on target.

Fort Lauderdale continued to press as the clock moved toward the final stages. Gordon nearly added another goal in the 76th minute, but her near-post attempt was saved.

Four minutes later, Gordon again played a major role in the attack. She delivered a quality pass to Thompson inside the box, but Thompson collided with the goalkeeper just outside the eight-yard box.

The home team had another opportunity in the 85th minute. A coordinated attack put Walters in position inside the box, and she sent a shot toward the top-right corner. The attempt narrowly missed its target.

Daniela Todd entered in the 74th minute as Fort Lauderdale used its available changes in an effort to keep the pressure on Dallas.

The final minutes were frantic. Fort Lauderdale continued looking for a second goal, and a late free kick nearly found Walters’ foot inside the eight-yard box. Dallas managed to survive the final pressure, however, and the visitors left with the victory.

The loss marked Fort Lauderdale’s third consecutive defeat. The team had previously lost on the road against Carolina Ascent FC and Tampa Bay Sun FC.

Through five matches, Fort Lauderdale now sits at 1-4-0. Despite the difficult start, the performance after halftime showed a different side of the team, particularly after Gordon’s goal gave the home side momentum.

Dallas scored twice before Fort Lauderdale responded. Knox put Dallas ahead in the 32nd minute, while Hamid scored just after halftime in the 46th minute. Gordon pulled one back for Fort Lauderdale in the 60th minute.

The club will not have much time to dwell on the result. Fort Lauderdale is scheduled to return to action Tuesday, September 22, against DC Power FC at Audi Field. The match is scheduled for 11 a.m.

The upcoming road game begins a stretch of consecutive away matches for Fort Lauderdale United FC. The club will be looking to use that opportunity to change the direction of its season after three straight losses.
Friday’s match showed how quickly the game can change. Dallas controlled much of the opening period and built a two-goal lead, but Fort Lauderdale responded with increased pressure, substitutions and several late chances.

In the end, the comeback stopped short. Gordon’s goal provided the spark, Locklear once again supplied a key assist, and the home side created several opportunities in the final 30 minutes. Dallas, though, held on through the final whistle to secure the 2-1 win.
