Clematis Street railroad crossing to close for two days while crews complete scheduled maintenance

West Palm Beach, Florida – Motorists traveling through downtown West Palm Beach will need to use alternate routes for two days as a section of Clematis Street closes for scheduled railroad work.

The City of West Palm Beach announced that Clematis Street at the Florida East Coast Railway and Brightline railroad crossing will be completely closed beginning Sunday, Oct. 4, at 6 p.m. The crossing is located just west of Quadrille Boulevard.

The closure is expected to remain in place until Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 6 p.m.

According to the city, the temporary shutdown is necessary so the railway and its contractors can perform maintenance and improvements at the railroad grade crossing.

Drivers should prepare for possible delays while the work is underway. The city is encouraging motorists who normally travel through the area to give themselves additional time and follow the posted detour.

Advance warning signs will be installed around the affected area to notify drivers about the closure before they reach the crossing.

Detours planned around railroad crossing

With Clematis Street unavailable at the tracks, motorists will be directed around the closed section using several nearby streets.

The vehicle detour will use Rosemary Avenue, Fern Street, Quadrille Boulevard and Banyan Boulevard.

The closure will also affect pedestrians attempting to cross the railroad tracks along Clematis Street.

Pedestrians will instead be directed along Quadrille Boulevard, Artists Alleyway and Banyan Boulevard. Artists Alleyway is located just west of the parking garage.

Although Clematis Street will be completely blocked at the railroad crossing, drivers will still be able to reach the Clematis Garage.

The city said the parking facility will remain accessible from both Banyan Boulevard and Clematis Street during the maintenance period.

The closure is scheduled to last approximately 48 hours, beginning Sunday evening and continuing through Tuesday evening. The work is focused specifically on the railroad grade crossing rather than a broader closure of Clematis Street.

City officials are asking residents, commuters and visitors to follow the temporary traffic arrangements and use caution when traveling through the surrounding downtown area.

The City of West Palm Beach also thanked the public for its patience and cooperation while the railroad maintenance and improvements are completed.

Anyone planning to travel through the area during the closure should consider the detour before beginning their trip, particularly during periods when downtown traffic is heavier.

The maintenance is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, with Clematis Street expected to reopen at the railroad crossing at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6.

People seeking additional information about the closure or maintenance work can contact the City of West Palm Beach Engineering Department by email at [email protected] or by phone at 561-764-8000.
