Davie residents invited to free document shredding and prescription drug drop-off event on October 17
Davie, Florida – Residents of Davie will have an opportunity to safely dispose of confidential paperwork and unwanted medications during a free community event scheduled for Saturday, October 17, 2026.
The Town of Davie will organize its Shred-A-Thon and Prescription Drug Drop-off event at Pine Island Park, also known as the Bamford Sports Complex, located at 3801 S. Pine Island Road.
The event will run from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. However, town officials have advised that collection services may end earlier if the disposal trucks reach their maximum capacity.
The program is available exclusively to Davie residents and is designed to provide a convenient way to get rid of sensitive documents and medications that are no longer needed.
Residents planning to attend should use the Southwest 36th Street entrance to access the designated drop-off area. The entrance from South Pine Island Road will remain available for other park visitors.
One of the main services offered during the event is secure document shredding.
Residents may bring up to five standard-sized boxes of paperwork, with each box measuring approximately 15 by 12 by 10 inches.
The shredding service is intended for documents containing personal, financial, or other sensitive information that should not be placed in regular household trash.
Examples of acceptable materials include old pay stubs, canceled checks, bank and credit card statements, billing records, and previous tax filings.
Documents containing Social Security numbers and other identifying details may also be brought for destruction.
Properly shredding these materials helps reduce the possibility of personal information being accessed or misused after documents are discarded.
However, certain office supplies and storage materials cannot be accepted.
Residents should remove binders, metal hanging folders, and binder clips from their paperwork before arriving at the event.
The town is also reminding participants that the shredding service is intended for residential use only. Businesses are not permitted to bring commercial documents for disposal.
Alongside document shredding, the event will provide a collection service for unwanted prescription and nonprescription medications.
The drug drop-off program allows residents to dispose of medications in accordance with applicable federal and state regulations.
Accepted items include prescription drugs, medication samples, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and medications prescribed for pets.
The service gives households an option for removing unused or unwanted medicines without keeping them in their homes indefinitely.
Not every medical product can be collected, however.
Thermometers, needles, syringes, and other sharp medical instruments will not be accepted. The same restriction applies to bloody or infectious waste.
Other prohibited items include hydrogen peroxide, aerosol cans, intravenous bags, inhalers, and EpiPens.
Residents should review these restrictions before attending to avoid bringing materials that collection staff cannot handle.
The prescription disposal service is also restricted to individual residents.
Medical organizations, including nursing homes, doctors’ offices, and other healthcare facilities, are prohibited from using the event to dispose of medications.
To ensure that the services remain available to eligible participants, the town will require proof of Davie residency.
Attendees must present a photo identification document along with paperwork showing their official residential address.
Acceptable address verification documents include tax bills, TRIM notices, voter registration records, utility bills, or other official government-issued documents.
The town has also established vehicle procedures to help keep the collection process organized and reduce unnecessary contact between residents and event workers.
Participants must remain inside their vehicles throughout the drop-off process.
All documents intended for shredding should be placed in the trunk or cargo area before arrival. Event staff will remove the materials directly from the vehicle.
Drivers should make sure their trunk or cargo area is unlocked or can be opened from inside the vehicle.
Residents are also asked to remove belongings that are not intended for disposal so workers can easily identify the materials being collected.
These procedures are intended to allow staff to handle the drop-offs while participants remain in their cars.
With the event limited to two hours or until trucks reach capacity, residents should plan their visits accordingly.
The October 17 collection provides two disposal services in one location, allowing eligible households to clear out old financial records and unwanted medications during a single trip.
