Oakland Park, Florida – The City of Oakland Park has achieved a remarkable milestone by earning the prestigious Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) for the 21st consecutive year. This honor was awarded for the City’s fiscal year 2025 budget, further cementing Oakland Park’s commitment to high standards of governmental budgeting and financial transparency.

The GFOA’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Award is a significant recognition, bestowed on municipalities that meet rigorous national criteria. This award assesses whether a city’s budget serves as an effective policy document, financial plan, operations guide, and communication tool. For over two decades, Oakland Park has consistently met and exceeded these standards, demonstrating its dedication to maintaining sound financial practices and transparency in its budgeting process.

“Achieving this award for 21 consecutive years is a testament to the City’s commitment to responsible financial stewardship and transparency,” said a city representative. “This recognition reflects our ongoing commitment to ensuring that every dollar is spent wisely and that our budgeting process supports our community’s long-term success and growth.”

In addition to the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award, Oakland Park received two special recognitions for its exceptional performance in specific budgetary categories. These special recognitions were awarded for the City’s Long-range Operating Financial Plans and its Capital Program, two key areas where the City demonstrated exceptional planning and execution. Special recognition is given when all three reviewers award the highest possible score in a category, highlighting Oakland Park’s excellence in long-term financial planning and capital improvement strategies.

The achievement underscores the City Commission and staff’s relentless pursuit of continuous improvement in financial planning. Oakland Park’s ability to maintain such a high level of budgeting excellence for over 20 consecutive years is a testament to the city’s ability to adapt and innovate, ensuring that its financial practices meet the evolving needs of the community.

The GFOA, founded in 1906, is a professional organization dedicated to advancing public finance practices. With over 23,000 active members, the GFOA has played a significant role in promoting excellence in budgeting. Its Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program, launched in 1984, has set the benchmark for transparent and accountable government financial reporting.

In a demonstration of fiscal responsibility and careful financial management, Oakland Park also adopted a reduced millage rate for the 2025 fiscal year, which runs from October 1, 2024, to September 30, 2025. The reduction reflects the City’s efforts to balance the need for adequate funding with the responsibility of keeping taxes manageable for its residents.

The City’s continued success in securing this award, along with the special recognitions, highlights its commitment to providing clear, accessible financial information to residents and stakeholders. Oakland Park’s transparent budgeting process ensures that taxpayers have confidence in how their money is being spent and reinforces the City’s strong foundation for future growth.

The GFOA’s recognition also aligns with Oakland Park’s long-term vision, as the City works to support its residents, improve public services, and invest in vital infrastructure. Through careful financial planning, Oakland Park is positioning itself to meet the needs of a growing community while maintaining its reputation as a model of responsible fiscal management.

As the City moves forward into the new fiscal year, it remains dedicated to upholding the highest standards of budgetary practices. Oakland Park’s ability to balance long-term planning with short-term financial needs is integral to its success. By continuing to demonstrate transparency and fiscal responsibility, the City sets a strong example for other municipalities in managing public funds effectively.

For Oakland Park, the award is more than just an acknowledgment of past achievements—it is a reminder of the ongoing work required to ensure the City’s financial health and stability. With a focus on long-term planning, fiscal responsibility, and transparency, Oakland Park is well-positioned to continue thriving in the years to come.
