Florida Department of Transportation begins $2 million safety and resurfacing upgrades on A1A this July

Fort Lauderdale, Florida – A new infrastructure project by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is set to begin this July, aiming to improve safety, lighting, and traffic conditions along A1A at two busy intersections—NE 14th Court and NE 27th Street. The project, which carries a $2.08 million price tag, focuses on enhancing pedestrian and driver experiences while ensuring long-term pavement quality.

The FDOT is prioritizing safety in this initiative, with a number of targeted upgrades planned. One of the major additions is a new signalized crosswalk at NE 14th Court, designed to increase safety for pedestrians crossing this frequently traveled stretch. At NE 27th Street, FDOT will install new mast arms and upgraded pedestrian signals to help regulate traffic and enhance walkability.

Another highlight of the project is the installation of amber-colored LED lighting along this part of A1A. These lights are not only energy-efficient and ideal for improving nighttime visibility, but they are also wildlife-friendly, helping to protect local species often sensitive to artificial light.

In addition to safety features, the project includes roadway resurfacing that will extend the life of the existing pavement and improve overall driving conditions. FDOT also plans to update sidewalk ramps, install new signage, and apply refreshed striping to improve navigation for all road users.

Construction is scheduled to begin in July 2025 and is expected to wrap up by spring 2026, pending weather and other unforeseen delays. While the project is underway, motorists can expect lane closures at specific times:

• At NE 27th Street, daily lane closures will occur from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
• At NE 14th Court, overnight lane closures will happen Monday through Thursday, between 9 p.m. and 8 a.m.

Despite these closures, FDOT assures that access to nearby homes and businesses will remain available throughout the entire construction period.

To help residents and commuters stay informed, FDOT will provide weekly traffic updates at www.d4fdot.com/bcfdot. Anyone with questions is encouraged to reach out to FDOT Community Outreach at (786) 494-6211 or email [email protected].

According to FDOT, this project is part of a broader effort to create safer, more accessible roads for everyone—whether walking, biking, or driving. By addressing key infrastructure needs now, the department aims to make A1A a safer and more efficient corridor for years to come.
