Heavy cruise weekend traffic is expected near Port Everglades and along SE 17th Street for the upcoming holiday weekends

Fort Lauderdale, Florida – Travelers and commuters in the Fort Lauderdale area should prepare for heavy traffic during upcoming cruise weekends, as Port Everglades anticipates peak activity. Congestion is expected to be particularly significant near Port Everglades, the Broward County Convention Center, and SE 17th Street during the busy holiday and weekend periods.

Officials have identified two key windows for travelers to plan accordingly: Friday, November 21 through Monday, November 24, and Friday, November 28 through Monday, December 1. These dates coincide with high passenger volume as cruise lines set sail from the port, increasing vehicle traffic in surrounding areas.

To help alleviate congestion, drivers heading to Port Terminals 2 or 4 are encouraged to use the newly constructed Convention Center Connector. The connector offers a direct route from Federal Highway (U.S. 1), SR 84, and SE 17th Street to the Convention Center, providing a smoother, more efficient path for those traveling to the terminals. Utilizing this route can help travelers avoid some of the worst congestion and reduce delays.

Authorities advise motorists to plan for extra travel time throughout the affected areas. “Travelers should anticipate delays and plan accordingly to avoid frustration,” said a spokesperson for the port. With large crowds, shuttle buses, taxis, ride-share vehicles, and private cars all converging near the terminals, even short trips can take longer than usual.

The heavy traffic is a routine part of Port Everglades’ busy cruise season, which draws thousands of passengers every weekend. Local officials are working closely with law enforcement and traffic management teams to ensure smooth operations, but drivers are reminded to stay patient and exercise caution while navigating congested streets.

In addition to the Convention Center Connector, motorists are encouraged to monitor traffic updates, follow posted detours, and consider carpooling or alternative transportation options when possible. Travelers should also remain alert for pedestrians and ride-share pickups, which are likely to add to congestion around the port and SE 17th Street.

As cruise activity continues to grow at Port Everglades, being aware of expected traffic patterns and planning ahead will help ensure a safer and less stressful journey for everyone.
