Broward County begins major dune and beach restoration project along Hollywood Beach to protect coastline and enhance resiliency

Broward County, Florida – Broward County has officially begun a major dune and beach restoration project along Hollywood Beach, marking an important step in preserving the area’s coastline and enhancing its resilience against erosion. The project, which is expected to be completed by the end of April, will bring fresh sand to sections of the beach and strengthen the protective dune system that safeguards the shoreline.

The restoration effort will rely on dump trucks to deliver sand to designated points along the beach, where heavy equipment will then spread and shape the material. The project is part of a broader, long-term initiative aimed at maintaining the health and stability of Hollywood Beach, a popular destination for both residents and visitors. Officials stress that no road closures or detours are anticipated during the work, allowing daily beach access to continue largely uninterrupted.

Construction will occur Monday through Friday from sunrise to sunset, with work progressing sequentially from the northern end of the beach to the southern end. The project has been carefully scheduled in two phases to ensure efficiency and minimize disruption to the public. Sand deliveries will begin at North Surf Road near Meade Street from Monday, January 12 through Friday, February 13. Following the completion of the northern section, deliveries will shift to South Surf Road near Bougainvilla Terrace, running from Monday, February 16 through Friday, March 20.

To maintain safety throughout the project, flaggers will be stationed at key locations to guide motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists. All truck routes and access points are part of a detailed Maintenance of Traffic plan, designed to keep traffic flowing smoothly and prevent accidents. County officials emphasize that safety for the public and workers is a top priority.

“This restoration project is an important investment in protecting Hollywood Beach from erosion while enhancing the long-term resilience of the coastline,” said a Broward County spokesperson. By replenishing the dunes and widening the beach, the county aims to buffer the shoreline against the effects of storms, high tides, and rising sea levels, ensuring that Hollywood Beach remains a vibrant and accessible destination for years to come.

Beyond its protective function, the project is expected to improve the recreational experience for beachgoers. Fresh sand will provide more space for sunbathing, walking, and family activities, while the restored dunes will support coastal vegetation and wildlife habitat. The combination of environmental protection and community enjoyment highlights the project’s dual focus on both natural resources and public benefit.

Broward County encourages residents and visitors to stay informed about the project and plan accordingly when visiting Hollywood Beach. The county’s website offers updates on project progress, sand delivery schedules, and safety information. By keeping the community informed and engaged, officials hope the restoration work will proceed smoothly and safely.
