Pembroke Pines to host Mayors Chess Challenge bringing community members and city leaders together for friendly competition and learning

Pompano Beach, Florida – Chess players of all ages and experience levels will soon have the chance to test their skills alongside local leaders as the City of Pembroke Pines prepares to host the Mayor’s Chess Challenge next month.

The community event is scheduled for Saturday, May 9, 2026, at the Pembroke Lakes Golf Club 19 on Taft Street. Organized as part of a larger countywide chess series, the gathering will bring together residents, elected officials, and casual players for a morning centered on strategy, learning, and community interaction.

Pembroke Pines is one of 19 Broward County cities participating in the traveling chess initiative, which aims to make the game more accessible while encouraging social connection across generations. Organizers say the event is designed to welcome everyone — from experienced tournament-style players to complete beginners who may never have touched a chessboard before.

Mayor Angelo Castillo is expected to take part in the event, giving residents a chance to interact directly with city leadership in a relaxed and friendly environment. The challenge is not limited to competitive players, and officials say the atmosphere will focus more on participation and engagement than intense competition.

Games will begin at 9 a.m. and continue through 11 a.m. Throughout the morning, raffle drawings are planned for 9:30, 10:00, and 10:30 a.m., adding another layer of excitement for participants and spectators.

At the conclusion of the event, organizers will announce the “Check Mate Champion” based on the final standings.

To ensure players feel comfortable regardless of experience, the event will feature different sections for beginner, intermediate, and advanced play. A special “Rookie Station” using the “No Stress Chess” format will also be available for visitors who are new to the game or simply want to learn the basics without pressure.

City officials say the chess challenge is about more than simply winning matches. The event also promotes critical thinking, patience, and community involvement while creating a welcoming space where residents can gather and interact.

The Mayor’s Chess Challenge has continued to grow in popularity throughout Broward County in recent years, attracting families, students, and longtime chess enthusiasts alike.

Residents interested in participating or learning more about the event can contact the city directly or visit Pembroke Pines’ special events website for additional details.
