Sewer main repair project on NE 49th Street and Bayview Drive reaches final restoration phase after emergency work in Fort Lauderdale neighborhood

Fort Lauderdale, Florida – A sewer repair project in Fort Lauderdale’s Coral Ridge Country Club Estates has reached an important milestone, with crews completing the emergency repair work and preparing for final restoration activities in the area near NE 49th Street and Bayview Drive.

The City of Fort Lauderdale, working with contractor Southern Underground Industries, began the emergency project on Thursday, June 18, after identifying the need to repair a damaged section of the local sewer system. The project included repairing approximately 60 feet of sewer gravity main, along with restoring affected asphalt and landscaping.

Officials announced that the sewer main repair has now been completed. The remaining work will focus on returning the roadway and surrounding areas to their previous condition, including asphalt repairs and the replacement of brick pavers affected by construction.

Asphalt restoration is scheduled to take place on Friday, July 10. Following that work, crews are expected to restore brick pavers between Monday, July 13, and Friday, July 17. Construction activities will take place Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The schedule may change depending on weather conditions or other unexpected circumstances, city officials said.

During the final stages of the project, nearby residents and drivers should continue to expect some temporary impacts. Construction equipment, heavy machinery, and backup safety alarms may create intermittent noise during working hours as crews complete restoration tasks.

Residents along NE 49th Street are also being asked to help keep the work area accessible during asphalt restoration. Neighbors should avoid parking along NE 49th Street on Friday, July 10, allowing crews enough space to safely complete the roadway work.

Driveway access will generally remain available throughout the restoration process. However, access may be temporarily affected when crews are working directly in front of specific properties. Construction teams will make efforts to communicate with residents before beginning activities that could limit driveway access.

Traffic conditions in the area have also changed as the project moves forward. NE 49th Street will remain open only to local traffic between NE 29th Avenue and Bayview Drive. Drivers who do not live in the area are encouraged to use alternate routes and follow posted signs when traveling near the construction zone.

Traffic on Bayview Drive will not be impacted during the final restoration phase. Traffic control personnel will remain available to assist drivers and help maintain safety around the work area.

The project originally required more significant traffic adjustments when construction first began. During the emergency sewer repair, Bayview Drive was closed at NE 49th Street, while NE 49th Street was closed between NE 29th Avenue and east of Bayview Drive. Local traffic was directed through alternate streets, including NE 47th Street, NE 28th Avenue, and Dupont Boulevard.

Through traffic was redirected to larger roadways, including E. Oakland Park Boulevard, US 1/N. Federal Highway, A1A/N. Ocean Boulevard, and E. Commercial Boulevard. Those temporary measures allowed crews to safely complete the underground sewer work while limiting risks to motorists and workers.

The city previously warned residents that construction activities could include temporary lighting, noise from equipment, and other disruptions. Crews worked to reduce the impact on nearby homes and businesses while maintaining a safe work environment.

Emergency infrastructure repairs like this are necessary to protect the reliability of the city’s sewer system and prevent further damage to surrounding roads, properties, and public areas. The completion of the sewer main repair marks the most critical part of the project, while the upcoming restoration work will focus on returning the neighborhood to normal conditions.

City officials thanked residents for their patience and cooperation throughout the construction process. They encouraged anyone traveling through the area to remain alert, follow traffic signs, and drive carefully while restoration activities continue.
Once the asphalt and brick paver restoration work is completed, the area around NE 49th Street and Bayview Drive is expected to fully reopen with normal access restored for residents and visitors.
