Wrong-way driver crashes into guardrail on Sawgrass Expressway before allegedly fighting with officers in Coral Springs

Fort Lauderdale, Florida – A Fort Lauderdale man was arrested after authorities said he drove the wrong way on the Sawgrass Expressway near Coral Springs, crashed into a guardrail and later became physically combative with a police officer.

Everton Michael Cytall, 43, was taken into custody on August 7 following a series of events that began when authorities received reports of a vehicle traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of the Sawgrass Expressway near Coral Ridge Drive, according to a Florida Highway Patrol arrest report.

Traffic Management Control cameras were used to track the vehicle as it moved along the highway. Authorities said Cytall was driving aggressively and nearly struck several other vehicles during the incident.

The situation ended when the vehicle, identified in the report as a Camry, crashed into a guardrail. The impact left the vehicle totaled, according to FHP.

But the incident did not end with the crash.

Authorities said Cytall got out of the damaged vehicle and began urinating along the side of the highway. Officers from the Coral Springs Police Department and deputies from the Broward Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene as law enforcement worked to control the situation.

According to the arrest report, a Coral Springs officer approached Cytall and repeatedly instructed him to sit on the guardrail. Authorities allege that Cytall refused and instead became physically combative with the officer.

The report states that Cytall resisted the officer with violence, adding another element to an already unusual highway incident.

During an inventory search of the disabled Camry, an FHP trooper allegedly found several small, white, round pills inside the vehicle’s center glove box. The pills were marked “U 35,” according to the report.

Cytall was taken to a hospital for a medical evaluation after the crash. While he was being admitted, authorities said they discovered another item during the process.

A small plastic bag containing an unidentified white crystal substance was allegedly found inside Cytall’s sock. The arrest report did not identify the substance or state what it was.

The discovery was noted as part of the investigation, but authorities did not provide additional information about the material.

FHP also reported that Cytall had been involved in a separate incident in Coconut Creek. The report did not include further details about that earlier incident.

The sequence of events left investigators dealing with several issues at once, including the alleged wrong-way driving, the crash, the confrontation with law enforcement and the items reportedly found in the vehicle and on Cytall.

After receiving medical attention, Cytall was transported to the Broward County Main Jail.

The allegations against Cytall are contained in the arrest report, and the case will proceed through the court system. An arrest is not a finding of guilt, and the charges must be resolved through the legal process.
