Fort Lauderdale United FC falls on the road against Carolina Ascent FC in a difficult 3-0 matchup

Fort Lauderdale, Florida – Fort Lauderdale United FC suffered its second loss of the 2026 season Saturday evening, falling 3-0 to Carolina Ascent FC at American Legion Memorial Stadium. The defeat leaves Fort Lauderdale with a 1-2-0 record and three points, while Carolina improved to 3-1-0 with nine points.

The result was decided largely in the first half, when Carolina took control with three goals. Fort Lauderdale showed attacking intent after falling behind but was unable to turn its opportunities into goals, leaving the visitors with a difficult deficit to overcome after the break.

Carolina opened the scoring in the 10th minute, putting Fort Lauderdale on the back foot early. The visitors quickly responded by pushing forward, particularly along the left side. Kiara Locklear and Farrah Walters created several dangerous moments between the 12th and 16th minutes as Fort Lauderdale looked for an immediate answer.

The pressure continued when Locklear was fouled just outside the penalty area in the 17th minute. Kelsey Oyler took responsibility for the resulting free kick, sending a left-footed effort toward goal, but the Carolina goalkeeper made the save.

Carolina then gained more breathing room in the 29th minute after a handball inside the box resulted in a penalty. The home side converted from the spot, giving Carolina a 2-0 advantage.

Fort Lauderdale nearly responded just five minutes later. Kelli Van Treeck delivered a perfectly weighted through ball to Locklear inside the box, but Locklear’s attempt narrowly missed the far post.

The visitors continued to create chances. Nicole Vernis tested the Carolina goalkeeper in the 37th minute with a shot on frame, but the attempt was saved. Carolina then counterattacked and added another goal in the 38th minute, extending the lead to three.

Locklear had another opportunity in the 40th minute, this time trying a sharp effort toward the near post. Once again, the Carolina goalkeeper denied her. Fort Lauderdale went into halftime trailing 3-0 despite creating several opportunities during the opening 45 minutes.

The second half began with Fort Lauderdale facing pressure from Carolina, but the visitors’ defense produced two important plays near the goal. Haley Craig made a goal-line save in the 48th minute, followed by Maggie Mace making another goal-line save five minutes later.

Fort Lauderdale head coach Tyrone Mears made his first substitutions in the 58th minute, bringing Emily Thompson and Molly McDougal into the match for Grace Cutler and Ella Simpson.

Additional changes came later in the contest as Mears continued looking for a way to change the flow of the game. In the 72nd minute, Abi Hugh and Shea Moyer entered for Oyler and Van Treeck. Taylor Smith then replaced Walters in the 84th minute.

Fort Lauderdale’s best chance of the second half came shortly afterward. In the 86th minute, Hugh sent a dangerous cross toward Sh’nia Gordon, creating an opportunity for the visitors to get on the scoreboard. However, the attempt was saved, and Fort Lauderdale ultimately finished the match without a goal.

Carolina’s three goals came from Aguilera in the 10th minute, Corbin in the 30th minute and Coleman in the 38th minute. The three-goal first-half advantage proved too much for Fort Lauderdale to overcome.

Despite the setback, Fort Lauderdale United FC will not have to wait long for another opportunity to earn points. The club will continue its two-match road trip next Saturday, September 12, when it travels to face Tampa Bay Sun FC in the first Florida Derby of the 2026 campaign.

The matchup will carry added importance for both teams. Fort Lauderdale will be looking to return to the win column, while Tampa Bay Sun FC will be hosting its home opener. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Suncoast Credit Union Field.
