Fort Lauderdale prepares for higher king tides and possible street ponding from September 26 through October 1

Fort Lauderdale, Florida – Fort Lauderdale residents can expect higher-than-usual tides over the coming days as king tides move into the area from Saturday, Sept. 26, through Thursday, Oct. 1.

The higher water levels could increase the risk of ponding, particularly when rain falls shortly before or during the peak tide periods. Residents are being advised to pay attention to changing conditions and use caution on local roads.

The first set of peak tides is expected Saturday, Sept. 26, at about 8:30 a.m. and again at 8:45 p.m. Tide levels will continue to rise at different times throughout the following days.

On Sunday, Sept. 27, peak tides are expected around 9:15 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. Monday’s high tides are forecast for approximately 10 a.m. and 10 p.m.

The schedule then moves later in the day. On Tuesday, Sept. 29, peak tides are expected at about 10:45 a.m. and 10:45 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30, is expected to bring peak tides around 11:30 a.m. and 11:30 p.m.

The final high tide listed for the period will occur Thursday, Oct. 1, at approximately 12:30 p.m.

While higher tides do not necessarily mean flooding will occur everywhere, rainfall can make conditions more difficult. Water may collect on streets and other low-lying areas when rain occurs around the time of a peak tide.

Drivers are being warned not to attempt to drive through standing water. Even when water appears shallow, road conditions can be difficult to judge, and avoiding flooded areas can help prevent vehicles from becoming stuck.

The series of higher tides will continue for several days, making the timing of both tides and rainfall important for residents traveling around Fort Lauderdale.

With peak tides occurring at different times each day, residents may want to keep the schedule in mind when planning trips, especially if rain is expected. The city is encouraging people to remain cautious around standing water and to report roads that cannot safely be used.

The higher tides are expected to continue through Oct. 1, after which the current period of king tides will come to an end.
