BSO detectives launch investigation into deadly single-vehicle hit-and-run crash that took place in Central Broward

Broward County, Florida – Authorities are investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash that took place in unincorporated Central Broward, leading to the death of a passenger days after the incident. Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) Traffic Homicide Unit detectives are working to determine the details surrounding the crash and identify the driver who fled the scene.

According to investigators, the crash occurred on March 22 when an individual driving a 2013 Hyundai Sonata was involved in a minor hit-and-run collision in Lauderhill. Instead of stopping, the driver fled southbound on Northwest 31st Avenue, but shortly after, a second hit-and-run incident took place in Central Broward.

Detectives report that as the driver reached the 800 block of Northwest 31st Avenue, they attempted to make a left turn onto Northwest Eighth Street. However, while making the turn, the vehicle began to swerve and spin counterclockwise, losing control. The Hyundai struck a raised concrete curb, ran over a sidewalk, and crashed into the front yard of a residence in the 3000 block of Northwest Eighth Street.

The vehicle then collided head-on with the northwest corner of the house. Following the impact, the car continued to rotate counterclockwise before rolling backward, retracing its path across the yard, over the sidewalk, and back onto Northwest 31st Avenue. The car ultimately came to a stop facing north between the left and center northbound lanes of Northwest 31st Avenue.

Instead of remaining at the scene, the driver immediately fled on foot in an unknown direction, leaving behind a male passenger in the front seat. Officers from the Lauderhill Police Department were the first to arrive and found the passenger unconscious inside the vehicle. Emergency responders from Lauderhill Fire Rescue transported the victim to a local hospital for urgent medical care.

Tragically, despite medical efforts, the passenger succumbed to injuries two days later, on March 24. BSO detectives were informed of the death by the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office on March 26, prompting an official homicide investigation into the incident.

Preliminary findings suggest that excessive speed was a contributing factor in the crash. However, detectives are continuing their investigation to gather more evidence and locate the driver responsible for fleeing the scene.

Law enforcement authorities are urging anyone with information about the crash or the whereabouts of the driver to come forward. The BSO Traffic Homicide Unit continues to seek answers in this case and encourages the public to assist in ensuring justice for the victim and their family.

As the investigation remains ongoing, authorities emphasize the importance of responsible driving and remaining at the scene of any accident to ensure proper assistance and legal accountability. Further updates will be provided as more details emerge in the case.
