Wilton Manors, Florida – A tragic car crash in Wilton Manors on the afternoon of Saturday, May 10, has claimed the life of a man, and detectives with the Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Investigations (THI) Unit are now piecing together what happened. The accident occurred in the 2400 block of Northwest Ninth Avenue just before 4:45 p.m.

Broward County Regional Communications received an emergency call reporting the crash at approximately 4:41 p.m. Emergency personnel from Wilton Manors Police Department and Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue quickly responded to the scene. Following their initial response, Wilton Manors Police requested the assistance of BSO’s specialized THI detectives to take over the investigation.

According to the early findings of the investigation, the crash involved a 2007 Toyota Matrix and a 2022 Nissan Versa. Detectives say the driver of the Toyota Matrix, an adult male whose identity has not yet been released pending next-of-kin notification, was exiting a parking lot and attempting to make a wide right turn onto Northwest Ninth Avenue. As the vehicle entered the roadway, it was struck on the driver’s side by a northbound Nissan Versa traveling in the left thru lane.

The impact of the T-bone-style collision forced both vehicles onto the raised center median. The Toyota Matrix then continued forward until it struck a tree, where it came to a stop. Emergency responders transported the driver of the Toyota to a nearby hospital. Sadly, he was later pronounced deceased. Authorities noted that he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, which may have contributed to the severity of his injuries.

The driver of the Nissan Versa, identified as 26-year-old Carla Hernandez of Plantation, was unharmed in the collision. Investigators have not yet indicated whether speed, distraction, or any other factors may have played a role in the crash. No charges have been filed at this time.

The investigation remains active, and detectives are continuing to gather evidence and interview witnesses to determine the full circumstances that led to the deadly accident.
