Pompano Beach, Florida – A tragic multi-vehicle crash in Pompano Beach has left a man dead, prompting an ongoing investigation by the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) Traffic Homicide Unit. The incident, which occurred on Thursday, July 24, 2025, is under scrutiny as detectives piece together the events that led to the fatality.

The collision occurred just after 2:30 p.m. near the 1500 block of Southwest 46th Avenue. Broward County Regional Communications received an emergency call reporting a crash involving multiple vehicles, with injuries at the scene. Upon arrival, authorities discovered a chaotic situation involving three vehicles: a 2012 Chevrolet Express, a 2018 Freightliner Box Truck, and a 2024 Hyundai Elantra.

According to the preliminary investigation, the drivers of the Chevrolet Express and the Freightliner Box Truck had been stopped in the northbound right lane of Southwest 46th Avenue. The Freightliner had become disabled, forcing both vehicles to halt in the traffic lane. Detectives stated that while the vehicles were stationary, Francine Gomes, driving the Hyundai Elantra, was traveling northbound in the same lane. Tragically, Gomes’s Elantra collided with the rear of the Chevrolet Express, causing a chain reaction. The impact pushed the Chevrolet into the back of the disabled Freightliner.

Aurelio Gonzalez, the sole passenger in the Chevrolet Express, was immediately affected by the collision. Thankfully, the drivers of the Chevrolet and Freightliner were not inside their vehicles at the time of the crash. Pompano Beach Fire Rescue personnel responded swiftly, providing immediate medical attention to Gonzalez before transporting him to North Broward Medical Center for treatment.

Sadly, despite medical efforts, Gonzalez succumbed to his injuries several days later. On Monday, July 28, 2025, he was pronounced dead at the hospital. BSO Traffic Homicide Unit detectives were notified of the death on Tuesday, July 29, as the investigation continues to uncover the precise causes behind this devastating accident.

This tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the unpredictability of the roads and the potential dangers drivers face every day. As the investigation progresses, local authorities remain committed to bringing clarity to this case while offering their condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
