Pompano Beach, Florida – A tragic accident on South Powerline Road claimed the life of a local scooter rider on Friday afternoon, August 1, as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit is leading the inquiry into the single-vehicle collision that occurred shortly before 1:34 p.m. Jeffrey Ferrer, riding a 2023 Italica RX 150 scooter, was traveling southbound in the far-right thru lane of South Powerline Road near the intersection with Palm Aire Drive when the accident happened.

According to investigators, a grey vehicle was moving eastbound on Palm Aire Drive and stopped at the intersection. At the same time, Ferrer proceeded through the intersection but veered from the far-right lane toward the center and left lanes. It was during this maneuver that he lost control of his scooter.

Detectives explained that Ferrer struck the raised concrete median’s crown, which caused him to be ejected from the scooter. The rider came to rest in the northbound designated left turn lane. Emergency responders from Pompano Beach Fire Rescue arrived quickly on the scene and transported Ferrer to Broward Health North Medical Center.

Sadly, Ferrer was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Authorities have stated that neither excessive speed nor driver impairment played a role in the incident, but the investigation is ongoing as detectives work to determine the exact cause of the crash.

Further details will be released as the investigation unfolds.
