Gulf red snapper private recreational fall season officially opens September 1 for anglers across Florida waters

Florida – Florida anglers are gearing up for the 2025 Gulf red snapper private recreational fall season, which officially begins on September 1. The season provides opportunities for those fishing from private recreational vessels as well as state-permitted charter vessels that do not hold a federal reef fish permit. For state-permitted charter vessels without the federal permit, fishing will be restricted to Florida Gulf state waters only.

The fall season will run in multiple windows from September through December. Anglers can plan trips during the following dates: September 1–14, 19–21, 26–28; October 3–5, 10–12, 17–19, 24–26, 31–November 2; November 7–9, 11 (Veterans Day), 14–16, 21–23, 27–30 (Thanksgiving weekend); December 5–7, 12–14, 19–21, and 25–28 (Christmas weekend). These staggered dates give recreational fishers flexibility while helping manage fish populations sustainably.

Florida’s ability to offer this fall season comes as a result of a data-driven management strategy led by the Florida State Reef Fish Survey (SRFS). Participation in the SRFS by anglers provides critical information that allows the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) to make informed decisions about fishery openings, closures, and limits. This scientific approach ensures that fishing opportunities can continue while protecting red snapper populations for future generations.

State regulations require that anyone fishing for red snapper from a private recreational vessel, whether in state or federal waters, must be registered as a State Reef Fish Angler. This free registration is in addition to a standard fishing license, even for those who are otherwise exempt from license requirements. Anglers can sign up online at GoOutdoorsFlorida.com to secure their designation and remain compliant with state regulations.

“Participation in the SRFS is critical to Florida’s ability to offer recreational red snapper seasons,” said a spokesperson from FWC. “Anglers help provide the data we need to ensure sustainable fishing while enjoying this popular Gulf species.”

For additional guidance on red snapper recreational regulations, including bag limits, gear restrictions, and season dates, anglers are encouraged to visit MyFWC.com/Marine. By following the rules and properly registering, fishers not only enjoy legal recreational opportunities but also contribute to the conservation of one of Florida’s most prized marine species.
