Pompano Beach, Florida – A tragic hit-and-run crash in Pompano Beach has claimed the life of a local bicyclist, and authorities have arrested the driver responsible. The Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) Traffic Homicide Unit confirmed that the fatal incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, October 12, and resulted in the death of 28-year-old Joseph Henriquez.

According to investigators, Henriquez was riding his bicycle westbound within the median break on North Palm Aire Drive just before 12:30 a.m. when he was struck from behind by a 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The impact caused Henriquez to be thrown into the eastbound lanes of traffic, leaving him severely injured. He was quickly transported to Broward Health North, where medical staff worked to save his life. Despite these efforts, Henriquez tragically succumbed to his injuries on Monday, October 13.

Following the crash, the driver of the Trailblazer continued westbound for a short distance before briefly returning to the scene and ultimately fleeing the area. Deputies from the BSO immediately began searching the surrounding neighborhoods for the suspect vehicle. Hours later, the Trailblazer was located at 3621 Oaks Clubhouse Drive, leading detectives to identify Sholom Marcus as the driver.

Detectives reported that Marcus admitted to being behind the wheel and acknowledged his involvement in the crash. Initially arrested on October 12 for failing to stop or remain at an accident involving serious bodily injury, Marcus’s charges were upgraded to leaving the scene of a crash involving death after Henriquez passed away.

“This is a heartbreaking loss for the community and for the family of Joseph Henriquez,” a BSO spokesperson said. “Our Traffic Homicide Unit is committed to conducting a thorough investigation, and we will continue to follow every lead to ensure justice is served.”

Authorities emphasized that the investigation into the crash remains active and ongoing. They also reminded the public of the severe consequences of leaving the scene of a serious traffic accident, particularly when it results in injury or death.

Neighbors and community members have expressed shock over the incident, highlighting the dangers that bicyclists often face on busy roads. Henriquez’s passing serves as a somber reminder of the importance of road safety and vigilance for all drivers.

BSO continues to gather evidence and interview witnesses as part of the investigation. Anyone with information about the crash is encouraged to contact BSO Traffic Homicide Unit for assistance.

This tragic event marks another reminder of the responsibilities that come with driving and the profound consequences of failing to stop after causing harm. Joseph Henriquez is remembered by family, friends, and the Pompano Beach community as a beloved young man whose life was cut far too short by a preventable tragedy.
