Attorney General James Uthmeier secures conviction of longtime Florida drug trafficker after high-profile case

Jacksonville, Florida – In a major victory for law enforcement, Attorney General James Uthmeier announced the successful conviction of Armaund Sims, 44, of Fernandina Beach, on charges of Trafficking in Cocaine. The case, handled by the Office of Statewide Prosecution, highlights the persistent efforts of prosecutors to hold dangerous criminals accountable and remove illicit drugs from Florida communities.

“This outcome speaks to the tireless work of our statewide prosecutors, who relentlessly pursued justice in this case,” said Attorney General Uthmeier. “Thanks to Senior Assistant Statewide Prosecutor Johnna Lessard and Chief Assistant Statewide Prosecutor Kelsey Bledsoe, this criminal will be held accountable for trafficking dangerous drugs into our communities.”

The conviction stems from a high-profile incident on October 11, 2023, when Sims fled a lawful traffic stop conducted by Florida Highway Patrol officers. The pursuit quickly escalated into a reckless, high-speed chase, during which Sims drove across a median before crashing into another vehicle. Law enforcement later recovered two kilograms of cocaine near the crash site, evidence that would play a crucial role in his prosecution.

Sims’ legal troubles stretch back years. When the state first tried him in February 2025, a Duval County jury found him guilty of Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Law Enforcement Officer, resulting in a five-year prison sentence. At that trial, however, the jury could not reach a verdict on the trafficking charge, leaving the case unresolved until prosecutors retried it later this year.

In October 2025, the Office of Statewide Prosecution, cross-designated as Assistant State Attorneys for the Fourth Judicial Circuit, brought Sims back to court. This time, prosecutors secured a conviction on the trafficking charge, ensuring that Sims faces significant prison time for his actions. Sims has a long history of felony drug convictions, making this latest sentence particularly consequential.

The investigation into Sims’ activities involved multiple agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security and the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, demonstrating the coordinated efforts required to tackle drug trafficking networks. The collaboration between federal and local authorities helped gather the evidence necessary to ensure a successful conviction.

Sims will be sentenced later this month and faces a 15-year mandatory minimum prison term for trafficking in cocaine. Prosecutors emphasized that this sentence reflects both the severity of his crimes and the ongoing commitment of law enforcement to protect communities from the dangers of illegal drugs.

The case serves as a reminder of the risks posed by repeat offenders in the drug trade and underscores the importance of persistent, coordinated law enforcement efforts. By holding Sims accountable, Attorney General Uthmeier and his team hope to deter future criminal activity and reinforce public trust in the justice system.

“This conviction demonstrates that no one is above the law,” said Uthmeier. “Our office will continue to work tirelessly to prosecute those who threaten our communities and ensure justice is served.”

With this successful prosecution, Florida authorities continue to signal their commitment to combatting drug trafficking and protecting residents from the devastating impact of illegal substances. Sims’ conviction represents not only a legal victory but also a broader step toward safer, drug-free communities throughout the state.

The case is part of an ongoing effort by the Attorney General’s Office to target high-level drug offenders, disrupt trafficking operations, and maintain a visible presence in communities affected by drug-related crime. By leveraging cross-agency collaboration and expert prosecution, Uthmeier’s team has demonstrated that long-standing criminal behavior can and will be addressed through the justice system.
