Attorney General James Uthmeier secures conviction of longtime Florida drug trafficker after high-profile case

The pursuit quickly escalated into a reckless, high-speed chase, during which Sims drove across a median before crashing into another vehicle. Law enforcement later recovered two kilograms of cocaine near the crash site, evidence that would play a crucial role in his prosecution.

Sims’ legal troubles stretch back years. When the state first tried him in February 2025, a Duval County jury found him guilty of Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Law Enforcement Officer, resulting in a five-year prison sentence. In October 2025, the Office of Statewide Prosecution, cross-designated as Assistant State Attorneys for the Fourth Judicial Circuit, brought Sims back to court.
