Plantation, Florida – The City of Plantation has officially confirmed Deputy Chief Jeffrey J. Schlegel as the next Chief of Police for the Plantation Police Department, marking a new chapter in the city’s public safety leadership. Chief Schlegel will assume command on December 5, 2025, the same day that current Chief Howard Harrison retires after an extraordinary 42-year career in law enforcement, including 16 years as Chief of Police.

Chief Schlegel brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of departmental operations, having served the Plantation Police Department since 2001. With more than 24 years of law enforcement experience, he has held leadership positions across multiple divisions, including Operations, Investigations, Special Operations, Support Services, and General Services. During his tenure as Deputy Chief, Schlegel played a pivotal role in shaping departmental strategy, upholding professional standards, and strengthening community engagement initiatives.

A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Chief Schlegel holds a B.A. in Criminal Justice from Florida Atlantic University and a Master of Public Safety from the University of Virginia. He is also a graduate of the University of Louisville’s Command Officer’s Development Course and the prestigious FBI National Academy, credentials that underscore his commitment to professional development and excellence in leadership.

The City also extended its heartfelt appreciation to Chief Howard Harrison, whose remarkable career has left an enduring legacy. Under his guidance, the Plantation Police Department achieved significant advancements in accreditation, training, and community policing, setting a foundation that Chief Schlegel will build upon in the coming years. Harrison’s leadership not only strengthened the department internally but also fostered strong trust and partnerships between the police and the community it serves.

City officials expressed their gratitude, stating, “Congratulations to Chief Schlegel as he begins this next chapter of leadership, and our deepest gratitude to Chief Harrison for his remarkable legacy of dedication and service.” This transition symbolizes both continuity and renewal, ensuring that the Plantation Police Department remains committed to public safety while adapting to the evolving needs of the community.
