Emergency crews are repairing a broken sewer force main at Cordova Road and SE 15th Street causing road closures and detours
Fort Lauderdale, Florida – City crews are responding to a significant sewer repair at the intersection of Cordova Road and SE 15th Street in Harbordale following a break in a 16-inch sewer force main. The incident, first reported early Friday morning, has prompted road closures and precautionary measures to ensure public safety while repairs and cleanup continue.
According to the latest update from city officials, as of 2 p.m. Friday, December 5, repairs remain ongoing and the intersection itself continues to be closed. “We appreciate the patience of our neighbors while this emergency response is underway,” officials said. The situation has created disruptions for both local residents and commuters, with traffic being rerouted to alternate streets to avoid the affected area.
Drivers traveling through the neighborhood are advised to follow posted signs and exercise caution. Eastbound SE 15th Street remains open to local traffic only from SE 10th Avenue to Cordova Road, while Cordova Road is accessible for local traffic between SE 15th Street and SE 16th Street. Motorists are being directed to detour using US 1/Federal Highway, SE 17th Street, Cordova Road, SE 16th Street, SE 10th Avenue, SE 15th Street, and SE 11th Court as alternate routes.
In addition to road closures, a precautionary waterway advisory has been issued for the Seminole River Canal and a portion of the Intracoastal Waterway. Officials emphasize that residents and boaters should remain alert and avoid contact with the affected areas until further notice. The advisory reflects a proactive approach to prevent potential environmental and public health concerns related to the sewer break.
City crews have been working throughout the morning to repair the damaged force main and manage any associated water and wastewater runoff. Emergency response teams are coordinating cleanup efforts alongside the technical repair work to ensure the intersection and surrounding areas can reopen safely as soon as possible. Updates will continue to be provided on official channels, keeping the public informed on repair progress and expected timelines.
Residents and businesses with questions or concerns are encouraged to contact the city directly at 954-828-8000 for information and assistance. Authorities stress the importance of following safety guidelines and avoiding the closed areas, highlighting that the ongoing repair is critical to maintaining proper sewer function and preventing further disruptions in the Harbordale community.
Officials have not yet confirmed a reopening time for the intersection, but they remain committed to completing repairs efficiently while ensuring the safety of residents, workers, and commuters. The combined efforts of city crews, emergency responders, and local residents are aimed at quickly resolving the issue and restoring normal traffic flow to the area.
