Pompano Beach, Florida – A Pompano Beach driver has been arrested in connection with a deadly two-vehicle crash that occurred more than two years ago, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office. The incident, which took place on May 21, 2023, left one person dead and multiple others hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

At approximately 5:42 p.m. on that day, Broward County Regional Communications received reports of a serious crash at the intersection of North Andrews Avenue and West Copans Road. Deputies from the Broward Sheriff’s Office and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue quickly responded to the scene, where the aftermath of the collision was immediately apparent.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the crash involved a 2012 Ford Focus driven by Jezeniah Gonzalez, traveling northbound on North Andrews Avenue, and a 2018 Infiniti Q50 heading westbound on West Copans Road, turning left onto North Andrews Avenue. According to officials, the Infiniti had a steady green arrow permitting the left turn when the Ford Focus entered the intersection against a steady red light, resulting in a devastating T-bone collision.

The impact of the crash was severe. Pompano Beach Fire Rescue personnel had to remove the roof of the Infiniti to extract both the driver and passenger, who were trapped in the mangled vehicle. All occupants of both cars were transported to Broward Health North with life-threatening injuries. Tragically, the passenger of the Infiniti later succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.

Investigators determined that excessive speed was a critical factor in the crash. Gonzalez’s Ford Focus was traveling at speeds estimated between 90 and 102 miles per hour, more than double the posted 40 miles per hour limit for the area. The combination of high speed and failure to obey traffic signals contributed directly to the severity of the collision.

On Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2025, Jezeniah Gonzalez turned herself in at the Broward Sheriff’s Office Main Jail. She now faces one count of vehicular homicide and one count of reckless driving with serious bodily injury. Authorities say the charges reflect both the tragic outcome of the crash and the dangerous driving behavior that led to the incident.

Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit detectives emphasized that the investigation was thorough and included extensive analysis of the scene, witness accounts, and vehicle dynamics. Their work was crucial in identifying the contributing factors and ultimately securing the arrest.

“This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of excessive speed and the importance of obeying traffic signals,” a BSO spokesperson said. “Lives are put at risk every time drivers ignore the rules of the road, and in this case, the consequences were fatal.”

The community continues to process the impact of the crash, which not only claimed a life but left multiple others with serious injuries and trauma. Authorities encourage anyone with additional information about the incident to contact the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

With Gonzalez now in custody and facing serious charges, the case underscores the ongoing efforts by local law enforcement to hold drivers accountable for reckless behavior and prevent future tragedies on Broward County roads.
